Although the late 19th century had seen rapid advances in vehicles powered by steam, electricity and internal combustion engines, many remained mechanically unreliable, difficult to operate, or expensive to maintain. Public confidence in the new technology was limited, and there was no clear agreement about which form of propulsion would prove most successful. A competition was therefore announced by Le Petit Journal, which sought to encourage innovation while attracting widespread public interest. The newspaper invited owners and manufacturers of horseless carriages that were safe, economical and easy to drive to enter the competition. More than 100 entries were received, including steam-powered vehicles, electric cars and petrol-driven designs. Preliminary qualifying trials reduced the field before the principal journey from Paris to Rouen, a distance of approximately 126 kilometres, which incorporated hills, villages and uneven roads.
On the 22nd of July 1894, the competitors departed for Rouen. While steam-powered vehicles initially demonstrated impressive speed, they required additional crew members and frequent stops for water and fuel. Meanwhile, petrol-powered cars proved simpler to operate and completed the course more consistently. The Comte Jules Albert de Dion's steam tractor crossed the finish line first, but the judges concluded that his vehicle required too much support to satisfy the competition's objectives. Instead, the principal prize was shared between the manufacturers Panhard et Levassor and Peugeot, whose petrol cars were considered the most practical overall.
