Every speech we have ever seen that makes us lean in and light up and come alive, I realized has exactly one thing in common. Maybe more than that, maybe they're also breathing.
But it's connected. The one thing is that the person who is speaking doesn't just care about what they're talking about, but they're willing to show us that they care. Not performatively, not over care, not push, but reveal. So what that ends up doing on a mechanical level for just talking about the body is that the words that they're saying, the body language that we're reading and the tone of the voice that we're hearing are all telling the same story. And the story is, this is the thing that matters to me. And your care can be anger, it can be enthusiasm, it can be grief, it can be massive, it can be tiny. But care is care. This matters.

Welcome to So Money, everybody. I'm Farnoosh Torabi. Today, we're talking about a kind of power. Most of us are terrified to claim the power of your own voice. My guest is Samara Bay. She's a speech and speaking coach to CEOs, politicians and tech founders. She's the author of the best-selling book, Permission to Speak. She was last on the show a couple of years ago, talking about the book and now she's back with something new, a viral TEDx talk about how to actually be human while you're speaking in public, whether that's on a stage, in a work meeting, or in a hard conversation at home. We have a link to that talk in our show notes. Here's the thing. Most of us think great public speaking means sounding polished, authoritative, in control. Samara says it's the opposite. The speakers who actually move us are the ones who let us see that they care, not perform it, but reveal it. And when our words and our tone and body language are all telling the same story, that's when people lean in. We get into why public speaking feels so loaded in the first place. What is actually happening in our bodies when fear takes over and the practical differences between practicing a talk and actually inhabiting it? And yeah, this is a money conversation, because whether you're asking for a raise, pitching an idea, negotiating, or standing up at a town hall about your property taxes, your ability to speak with power and stay human while doing it is directly tied to the outcomes you get. Here's my conversation with Samara Bay.
Samara Bay. It's always good when you start the show laughing. I feel like we weren't even hitting record and we were cracking ourselves up. Do we care to tell the audience about our joke?
**Samara Bay** (3:55)
Of course.
**Farnoosh Torabi** (3:56)
Or the hilarity of what we're about to discover?
**Samara Bay** (3:58)
Go for it. What are we about to discover?
**Farnoosh Torabi** (4:01)
We're going to discover why it's so money to be able to stand in your power and use your voice in a way where you can connect and get your message across and change and heal and help all the things that we want to do, whether it's like in a meeting at work in front of our families, on a TED stage, running for political office. You've helped so many people in so many realms of life.
You were last on the show talking about your powerful book, Permission to Speak. And now you're back talking about a viral TED talk that you gave kind of about the same topic of like giving yourself permission to speak, but more so doing so in a way that like you can be human while you're doing it. Because we forget that we are humans when we are up on stage. Why is this funny? Because like it does have to do with money, right? It does at the end of the day.
