Hey, friends, welcome back to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. Before we get started today, I just wanted to say thank you for listening. Thank you for sharing episodes with friends and family. Thank you for joining our newsletter. Thank you for telling others about 1000 Hours Outside. There are so many podcasts you could listen to, and so many places you could spend your time. I do not take it lightly that you spend some of it here. We have had such an incredible stretch of guests lately, and I'm just really grateful that I get to bring these conversations to you.
Dr. Stephanie Seneff is joining us today. She has spent decades as a researcher at MIT, and today we will be talking about her book, Toxic Legacy, and her research into glyphosate, the active ingredient historically associated with herbicides like Roundup, and the questions she believes we should be asking about its effects on human health and the environment. I learned so much reading Stephanie's book and preparing for this conversation, and I think you will too. Here is my conversation with Dr. Stephanie Seneff.
You know, there are so many little things we do as parents to help our kids sleep well. We get them outside, keep them moving, try to limit screens at night. But one thing I hadn't thought much about was how they're actually breathing while they sleep. A lot of parents don't realize their kids may be sleeping with their mouths open, and persistent mouth breathing can be associated with restless sleep, dry mouth, moodiness, oral health concerns, and even development. That is where Muzzle Kids Tape comes in.
It is a simple bedtime tool designed to greatly encourage lip closure and support nasal breathing. And what I really like as a mom is their patented Breathe Safe Center opening. It doesn't completely seal the mouth, so there's still room to talk, cough, sneeze, or drink water if needed. They make Muzzle for adults too, so it can be a simple nighttime habit for the whole family. Go to muzzlesleep.com and use code 1000HOURS for 10% off. That's muzzlesleep.com, promo code 1000HOURS.
I have always thought that sweet and salty is one of those combinations that just makes sense, like something that can be perfectly good on its own, but add just a little salt to something sweet, and suddenly it's 10 times better. So I was very excited when Kachava came out with their new flavor, salted caramel. Caramel is already good, but that little bit of salt just makes the whole thing work. And what I love about Kachava is that it's not just something that tastes good. Two scoops give you plant-based protein, fiber, greens, and so much more in one really simple shake. It's an easy way to help fill some of those nutritional gaps, especially on days when you're busy and just need something quick. And there aren't any artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners. It's just clean nutrition that actually tastes delicious. Embrace your salty side. Go to kachava.com and use code 1000hours for 15% off your first order. That's kachava, spelled kachava.com.
Code 1000hours.
Welcome to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast.
I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. And we are going to be talking about one of the most critical topics of conversation that we could be talking about today. We're going to be talking about glyphosate. An author and researcher, Dr. Stephanie Seneff is here. She wrote this incredible book, incredible book called Toxic Legacy, How the Weed Killer Glyphosate is Destroying Our Health and the Environment, One Scientist Determined Quest to Reveal the Truth. Stephanie, welcome to you. It's an incredible book.

Thank you so much. I'm glad you appreciate it.

Okay. It is an honor to get a chance to talk with you. You are a senior research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the most innovative research universities in the world. You have done decades of research. You've published over 200 peer-review scientific articles.
You got your PhD in 1985 and have just been doing incredible work for decades upon decades. So I wanted to ask to sort of kick this off about, what's very interesting about this book, Toxic Legacy, is autism comes up a lot in the book, because this is something that you are studying. You are studying environmental factors that might be causing the increase in autism among America's children. And so can you talk about that you went and listened to someone talk about glyphosate and at that moment you hadn't heard the word before?
Stephanie Seneff (4:50)
It's amazing actually, because I had been looking for five years. I started looking in 2007, completely pivoted on my research at MIT. Unfortunately, they let me do that, which was great. I've been doing toxic chemicals in health and disease ever since then. And I was very interested in autism, because I kept seeing the rates go up every year. And it was like, oh, yeah, don't worry, we're just diagnosing it more. And I thought, there's got to be something going on here. I never knew anybody with autism, or knew anybody who knew anybody with autism when I was a child.
