There are certain flavors that immediately make you feel like you're eight years old again. And for me, one of those is that cinnamony, sweet breakfast flavor. Like the milk at the bottom of the cereal bowl, they absolutely were not going to leave behind. So when Cachava came out with cinnamon French toast, I thought, okay, this is very much speaking my language. It's warm and cinnamony, and just has that really nostalgic breakfast flavor. And they actually use real cinnamon bark, which I think is why it tastes so rich instead of having that fake, overly sweet cinnamon taste. And meanwhile, it's Cachava. So two scoops give you plant-based protein, fiber, greens, and so much more. It's one of those rare things that tastes like a treat, but is actually giving your body something substantial. Treat yourself to a childhood favorite. Go to cachava.com and use code 1000HOURS for 15% off your first order. That's cachava, kachava.com, code 1000HOURS.

Here is something I think a lot of parents today probably don't pay much attention to.

Is your child sleeping with their mouth open? We spend so much time thinking about what helps our kids sleep. Getting enough movement, spending time outside, winding down at night, but how they're breathing while they sleep matters too.

Persistent mouth breathing can be associated with restless sleep, dry mouth, moodiness, oral health concerns, and even development. Muzzle Kids Tape is a really simple tool designed to gently encourage lip closure and support nasal breathing while kids sleep.

What makes Muzzle different is their patented Breathe Safe Center opening. It doesn't completely seal the mouth, which makes it feel much more approachable as a parent. And Muzzle makes adult options too for anyone dealing with nighttime mouth breathing or waking up with a dry mouth. Go to muzzlesleep.com and use code 1000HOURS for 10% off. That's muzzlesleep.com, promo code 1000HOURS.

Hey friends, welcome back to the 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. I'm Ginny Yurich, and this is one of those stories where you just keep thinking, she did what? Cole Brauer became the first American woman to race a sailboat solo and nonstop around the world, 27,000 miles. She sailed through hurricane-force winds and enormous waves. She broke her ribs, she got food poisoning, and had to give herself an IV, and through all of it, She was alone on this boat in the middle of the ocean.

But here's what makes Cole's story even more interesting to me. She didn't grow up in some great sailing family. She didn't have the right last name or the connections or the money. She lived in a van. She took whatever jobs she could get. She failed a lot, and she just kept starting again. Her new book is called First Light, and this conversation is about sailing, but it is also about grit, failure, confidence, nature, loneliness, and what happens when you decide that instead of inheriting a legacy, you are going to create one. Make sure you're following the podcast wherever you're listening. We have so many incredible conversations coming up, and if you love learning about things you didn't even know you were interested in, you are in the right place. Okay, I love this one. Here is Cole Brauer.

Welcome to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. My name is Ginny Yurich, I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, and what a treat. Today, I get an opportunity to talk with a woman who sailed a sailboat around the entire world, 27,000 miles. Cole Brauer, welcome.

Cole Brauer (4:07)

Oh, thanks so much for having me.

Ginny Yurich (4:09)

What a life. What a story. You've written about it in a book called First Light, which is such a gorgeous name for a boat. I loved how you talked about how you love the first light. This is the first American woman to race a sailboat solo and non-stop around the globe. Sailing solo, but not alone. Let's kick it off with a little bit of your backstory. You would always expect that someone, this is a pretty unique subculture. There's a lot to know. There's a lot to know about how the boats work, and they can be expensive and all this. So you would think that for the most part, someone grows up this way. They grow up and their grandpa did it, and their mom did it, and they've got this lineage of boat things, and you didn't.

Cole Brauer (4:54)

No, not at all. It's a totally different lineage than normal.

I used to say that I don't have the legacy to be in this sport, and then about three years ago, I was like, actually, I'm creating the legacy right now. For the next generation of people coming up, either my own future children or young women that are coming up into the sport who believe that they can't do it because they didn't come from the correct last name, the Roosevelt's Mayhew, or the Kennedys, which have always been big sailors on the East Coast. And I wanted to be the person who's like, no, you don't have to. You can be the Browers. You don't have to be coming out of the sport or born from the womb into this really expensive sport. You can actually do it in a way, and you can do it in a great way, and a fun, a super, super fun way.
