What if the things we chase to feel worthy—success, achievement, appearance, approval—can’t actually give us the worth we’re looking for?

There are so many things we think about when we think about our kids' future. What will they become? Who will they marry? Where will they live? What will our family look like 10, 20, 30 years from now? And somewhere along the way, we realize that planning for their future also means planning for the possibility that life doesn't go exactly the way we hope. That's why we have life insurance. Not because we live afraid of what might happen. Actually, it's the opposite. It gives us peace of mind, knowing that if something happened to one of us, the other wouldn't suddenly be trying to figure out how to support five kids while also dealing with unimaginable loss. If you've been putting this off, ethos makes getting life insurance remarkably simple. It's 100% online. You can get a quote in seconds, apply in minutes, and potentially get same-day coverage. There's no medical exam, just a few simple health questions. You can get up to $3 million in coverage with some policies as low as $30 a month. You spend your whole life taking care of your family. This is one more way to take care of their future. Take 10 minutes to get covered today with life insurance through ethos. Get a free quote at ethos.com/1000hours. That's ethos.com/1000hours.

Was breakfast for dinner a big deal in anyone else's house growing up? Because there was something about having French toast at 6 o'clock at night that felt like you were getting away with something. And that is exactly the kind of nostalgia Kachava's new Cinnamon French Toast flavor taps into.
It tastes like an actual comfort food. Warm cinnamon, that slightly sweet French toast flavor, except you're getting plant-based protein, fiber, greens, and whole body nutrition in a shake. I think that's what Kachava does really well. The flavors are genuinely good. Cinnamon French Toast is the newest one, but there's chocolate, vanilla, chai, matcha, coconut acai, strawberry, coffee, chocolate mint. You can actually find the flavor you look forward to drinking. Treat yourself to a childhood favorite. Go to kachava.com and use code 1000HOURS for 15% off your first order. That's kachava, kachava.com, code 1000HOURS.
Hey friends, welcome back to the 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. I'm Ginny Yurich and I'm so glad you're here. I learned a tremendous amount from today's conversation and the author's book. Did you know that for someone struggling with low self-esteem, compliments can actually make them feel worse? Or that you can have memories you don't consciously remember, but your body may still respond to them?
Or that researchers now know we can actually change the way our old memories affect us? I had never heard some of this before. Our guest is psychologist Dr. Marisa Franco, New York Times best-selling author of Platonic, and her new book is called Worth. We talk about self-worth, attachment, old memories, open memories, relationships, parenting, technology, and the concept of becoming more secure-ish.
If you like conversations that make you see something you've experienced your whole life in a completely different way, make sure you are following the show. That's what we are trying to bring you all week long. This is a fascinating one. Here is Dr. Marisa Franco.
I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. And we are going to be talking about Worth today, which is something that we want to obviously make sure that we have as people. And if we have kids that we're passing it on to them, an author of a brand new book called Worth, The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, Marisa Franco is here. Dr. Marisa Franco, welcome also, has another New York Times bestseller called Platonic. I'm so honored to be able to talk to you.
Marisa Franco (4:08)
I'm so happy to be here. Thanks so much for having me.
Ginny Yurich (4:11)
This book I thought was super interesting. I've never really considered Worth, Worth versus Self-Esteem. I'd love to kick it off with the fact that I had never heard of attachment up until maybe 12 months ago.
Marisa Franco (4:22)
Maybe 18
Ginny Yurich (4:23)
I does feel like all of a sudden then it's everywhere and you talk about that in your book, Worth. Secure attachment has become something close to a status symbol you wrote, and now everyone's talking about this, but you say it can be easy to perform.
Marisa Franco (4:41)
Yeah. Absolutely. I think if people are plugged in on the conversation on attachment theory, this idea that people that are securely attached, who basically had very caring parents and go into the world being able to relate very well with people, build strong relationships, that they are sort of the, there's this hierarchy and the securely attached people are at the top, and you can understand why, right? They are good at connecting with people, make people feel really safe, but I think the impact of this, of the conversation on attachment cells, has been in some ways to shame people who aren't secure in that way.
