Welcome to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. My name is Ginny Yurich. I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. And I have been so excited about this conversation. I think that hands on anything is so important in today's day and age. We've got a son who loves to draw. And so it is a true honor to have Butch Hartman here. Butch Hartman is a well-known animator, artist, director, writer, writer, and director of a lot of great animation films.
He's been a huge part of our lives. He's been a huge part of our lives. He's a well-known animator, artist, director, writer, producer, voice actor, entrepreneur, and Jesus-loving Christian. Butch, welcome.

Well, thank you so much. I'm glad I'm here. In fact, I should change my name on my Zoom here. So my name isn't just The Garden Cartoon. I'll change my name. Hey, it's great to be here and thank you for having me. I'm so honored that I'm here with you. And you obviously have a lot of people you talk to. So squeezing me in was very nice. Thank you.

I'm thrilled. I think this is so important. And I think what you offer to budding artists is a huge deal. You've got the Butch Hartman Studios and you have these webinars and courses that people can take. And I think it can be a discouraging day and age because of AI.
But you still want to have these skills. This is still developing your brain, your creativity. So I would love if you would take us back to the beginning. You're best known for the Nickelodeon animated series, The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, along with several others, and currently working on things that are good, good for kids, good for families. gardencartoon.com, brand new content for Christian kids. It's funny, I hear that from a lot of Christian people. We didn't have any cable. I hear that all the time. It's funny, I didn't become a Christian until I was 35 years old. So I grew up in a home where we didn't really talk about the Lord, unless you hit your finger with a hammer, then Jesus's name was yelled all over the place. But I didn't become a Christian until I was 35 However, I did grow up in a home where my art and my love for art was encouraged.
My dad was a real big supporter of what I did.
I was born in 1965 I'm 61 years old now. So growing up in the 70s and the 80s, we didn't have any internet, none of that stuff. And so I just loved TV. There was a lot of chaos in my house growing up. I came from a very chaotic upbringing. Broken home, my parents were divorced. So I would find a lot of solace and a lot of peace in comic books and movies and cartoons and things like that. All my other friends were out playing sports and all that stuff. To this day, I have zero interest in sports. I will go to a sporting event. If you ask me to come to a sporting event, I will totally go. You ask me to go bowling, I will totally go. But I don't wake up in the morning thinking, hey, sports. I don't do that kind of thing. But I do wake up in the morning going, what can I draw today? What can I make today? What can I create today? That's what I want other people who are creative to do as well. I want to encourage that with people. But I was a little kid.
