My name is Ginny Yurich, and the founder of 1000Hours Outside. We're going to be talking about a phenomenal topic today. We're going to be talking about walking. And there is this book out, it's a newer book. It's called Walking Your Way to Vitality, integrating walking, breathwork and mindfulness into your daily exercise. Two incredible doctors are here to talk to us today.
Dr. Jacques MoraMarco and Dr. Yun Kim, welcome to you both.

**Jacques MoraMarco** (1:30)
Well, thank you Ginny for having us.

**Yun Kim** (1:32)
Thank you for having us.

**Ginny Yurich** (1:33)
Could you give a little bit of your back story of how the two of you met and ended up writing a book together?

**Jacques MoraMarco** (1:39)
Well, you know, my back story is that I've been in the field now for 50 years, practicing acupuncture, herbal medicine, the Tai Chi, which is really trending this day, like Tai Chi walking. But of course, I've done the classical Tai Chi.
And then in the early days, in the 1980s, I used to take care of AIDS patients. And that was the inspiration for the book. So going back to those days where people were given a very short life expectancy of 18 months, we were able to implement some of these techniques prior to the cocktail, prior to the medication. And I saw some very positive effect. And some of those patients are still here after all this time, after 40 years, they're still alive. They're, you know, taking the antivirals. But we actually met at the acupuncture college, called Emperors College, way back 40 years ago. Dr. Yun was working there at the college, a little younger than me, of course. And she was working in the herbal department.
And the college being one of the great contribution from your mom and dad.

**Yun Kim** (2:45)
Yes. Yes. So my parents in the 80s, in the early 80s, founded an acupuncture school called Emperors College in Los Angeles. And Jacques was one of the first faculty members way back when in those early years. In the 2000s, I started working at Emperors College formally. And that's when Dr. MoraMarco came back as our academic dean. And so we met then. And it was around that time that I was learning how to meditate and learning about mindfulness.
And I had the very good fortune of doing a meditation retreat with the great Vietnamese monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh in California. And it was really extraordinary. His signature teaching was walking meditation. So I remember doing this incredible walking meditation with 200 retreatants in silence from the meditation hall up to the hill. And I can still picture him very clearly. He emanated so much peace and serenity. And I thought, wow, this is something. This is something that I need to learn to bring peace and serenity into my life. And so ever since then, I had been interested in meditation, walking, and then moved into movement therapies like Tai Chi and Qi Gong. And Dr. MoraMarco had written a brilliant book 25 years ago called Ways of Walking. And I had told him, this is such a wonderful book. It's way ahead of its time. You need to reissue. You need to update and reissue. And I would say that to him off and on for years.
Things have their own timeline, right? And so in 2024, Dr. MoraMarco said, I'm ready. Would you help me update the book? Bring it to the modern world, bring new research, take out sort of the information that's no longer current. And so we started on that project together. And it's been an incredible collaboration. It really brings all of our passions, all of our philosophy, all of our recommendations about how to live a healthy and vital life.
