And how can we in the sort of gist today is like, how can we use this time in history to make ourselves even more human and really focus on our humanity? Jeff Burningham, who has run for governor of Utah and also done incredible in the business world, has written a book called The Last Book Written by a Human, Becoming Wise in the Age of AI. Jeff, welcome.
**Jeff Burningham** (1:38)
Ginny, it's so good to be with you today.
**Ginny** (1:41)
Okay, so you have done a lot in your career, in your sort of life career, your father, husband.
Also, you have invested in all of these tech companies and startups over the years, huge companies, fast growing companies. Additionally, you ran for governor of Utah. Additionally, you went back and got your MBA.
So can you talk about what creates a type of person that has that much drive?
**Jeff Burningham** (2:08)
Good question. Could I maybe say trauma and wounding?
I mean, that is an honest answer.
Let me give you two ideas. Number one, I think that's just kind of how I'm wired. I'm an Aries. You know, there's a lot in my kind of DNA that I think is about action, adventure, making things happen, a very type A personality. I grew up, as you know, in a very conservative household and I'm the oldest of six children. So our family wasn't always happy growing up, despite maybe appearances, I bet you or listeners, a lot of listeners can relate to this in some form or fashion. So while it's kind of natural, let's say, in my DNA or wiring, number one, the second thing or the thing that I would say hypercharged this for me was wounding. As you know, Ginny, we are all wounded. That is the human condition. It comes for us all. We can try to run from it, hide from it, but our wounding shows up in unique ways, our trauma and I experienced my fair share of that growing up. And I think that it exacerbated or hypercharged kind of this drive to achieve, to achieve, to achieve. Maybe I'll just say one thing from the book. You read it, but I talk about climbing my little mountain of success and believe me, I've created quite a little bit of a mountain and getting to the top. And I said that there was nothing but a cold howling wind, void and more void on top of that.
And so what do you do when you've done all the outward things to supposedly, I'm putting in quotes, be successful. You've achieved all your dreams, yet you still don't have the answers, yet you're still not healed inside, you're still wounded. That starts, I think, the trajectory to look inside yourself rather than outside yourself for award, success, validation. And that's the real journey. That's the road less traveled, I would argue, generally speaking. And it's an exciting journey to look inside, but not an easy one.
**Ginny** (4:33)
Well, and in particular, in this stage of life that we're in with the technology that's swirling around us, this is a particularly pertinent topic because you're talking about in your own life, you're doing, doing, doing, doing, doing, going, going, going, going. And there is a lot of pressure to keep the way that you wear it is keep up with the machines. Our intelligence is no longer going to be our competitive advantage. Will we try to keep up with the machines or will we choose to lean into our more real advantage or real advantage, which is our humanity? And so this is a book about rehumanizing and we must be more human, not less. As we have this, you know, increasing amount of AI.
