My First Million

June 30, 2021

Sam (@TheSamParr) and Shaan (@ShaanVP) provide a sneak peak into their portfolio on this episode, breaking down recent investments they've both made. For each deal they discussed the company, why they invested, why it can be good, and why it might not work.
Speakers: Sam Parr, Shaan Patel

All right, there's this amazing book called Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got. I read it a few years ago and it changed my life.
And the reason I loved it was because it basically talks about how to get and make more money using things that you already have.
Coincidentally, today's podcast is brought to you by Business Made Simple. It's a podcast by Donald Miller, who I'm gonna tell you about in a second, but he has this amazing episode that's all related to this book and the things that I learned in this book. It's called How to Make Money with What You Already Have. It's an incredible episode. It talks about all the stuff that I learned in this book. The host is Donald Miller. I didn't know who Donald Miller was up until recently, but over the last 12 months, this is totally by coincidence. It was all separate people. They said, you have to check out Donald Miller. He's amazing. So I'm happy that he's part of HubSpot's Podcast Network. You can check it out, Business Made Simple Podcast. It's where he coaches you on how to build your business like an airplane, where the cockpit is your leadership, the body is your overhead, the right engine is your marketing, the left engine is your sales.
You have to check it out. This guy's amazing. It's called Business Made Simple with Donald Miller.

Props to this guy for doing this. I got to give him credit.
I'm more into this than you are. I kind of love that a guy's dreaming like this.

**Sam Parr** (1:21)
So we just did this other intro. Mike's got screwed up. We're gonna do it again. We could say what we said even faster though. We're talking about the startups that we're investing in. I actually put it into a format. So like the name of the deal, why each of us did it, why it can be great. But I also wanna say why it can suck, why it will fail.
This is like the disclaimer here. We have a stake in everything that we're gonna be talking about.
I frankly don't care if people use it or not. I mean, this is more so entertainment. I have a feeling some people will use it, but also this isn't like investment advice. A lot of these companies are very likely gonna go out of business because that's just how startup investing works.

**Shaan Patel** (2:02)
Yeah, and you couldn't invest in them if you wanted to, most likely.
The good outcome of this would be, A, you hear about some cool startups that are doing interesting things, and it just gets your wheels turning about like, oh shit, I never even thought about that, that's exciting. And then the other is you get a taste of what it's like to invest in deals and how an angel investor thinks about investing in early stage startups. All right.

**Sam Parr** (2:24)
I want people to know, I'll say for me, I'm not necessarily, I'm not saying I'm good at this, but I'm just kind of doing it like publicly. So people are watching me get in shape publicly. I've probably done 30 deals. But anyway, you wanna, all right, let me go first, because I have this deal that I have to make an introduction to you, because they specifically asked for you. It's the top one, it's called AbstractOps.
And I need to know if you want to join this or not.

**Shaan Patel** (2:50)
I just emailed the guy today because I was like, shit, when I saw you write this, I was like, oh shit, I forgot to reply to that guy.

**Sam Parr** (2:56)
Did I introduce you?

**Shaan Patel** (2:58)
You told me about it. And I was like, I forgot to ask about it.

**Sam Parr** (3:01)
Yeah, I offered you him or him one. Somehow you're already in the know.
And he said he wants to talk to you. So I know this guy, there's two guys. I don't know the second one. The first one, his name is Adam Spector. He's one of the founders. I think he's the COO. I've known him since 2014 or 15 maybe.
I've been in a book club with them. There's four of us who have a book club. And I invested in the seed round. I didn't have much money at the time. But I think I invested either $1,000 or $2,000. I don't remember. But I got pro rata. So what that basically means is when they were going to raise again, I got to invest again. And that's how I find out about this. Adam's amazing. I ended up investing around $400,000. And I got a preface list that's saying that I do my own money that comes straight out of my checking account. And then I also have this thing called Hampton VC. So hamptonvc.com. Or is it.com or.co?.co.
