The Nick Bare Podcast

Nick Saban’s “Importance of Nothing” speech got me thinking about entitlement—what we believe we’re owed and how that mindset shapes the way we work, respond, and live.

Today's episode is inspired by a Nick Saban quote I came across a few days ago, maybe not quote, but a speech. Now if you're unfamiliar with Nick Saban, he is a famous, notorious college football coach. And while he delivered the speech that I'm about to share with you, he has led teams to multiple championships. He is an aspirational leader, mentor, coach. And when he delivered this speech, he was at the University of Alabama, Crimson Tide. It was 2023, after a practice leading into an upcoming game against Arkansas. And he had a media interview, and he delivered this speech, which I believe is so powerful. And the title is The Importance of Nothing. And it goes, y'all ready for a lecture? We talk about the importance of nothing. You get up every day. You're entitled to nothing. Nobody owes you nothing. You could have talent, but if you don't have discipline, and you don't execute, you don't focus, you get nothing. If you're complacent and not paying attention to detail, what does that get you? Nothing. So nothing is acceptable, but your best. Everything is determined by what you do, and you trying to be your best. So you can build on positive performance. That's the only thing. There should be nothing else but that for everybody. That's what we have to stay focused on. That's what we need to do. We need to not accept anything but our best in terms of what we're preparing to do.

The importance of nothing.

As I heard that speech, it really resonated with me. Because the importance of nothing is all about entitlement. We are entitled to nothing. Grateful for everything we have, but entitled to nothing. I believe we have been uniquely and individually gifted with a set of talents. Each one of us. No talents better than the other. And I share that with you from a Christian lens, a faith-based lens, for myself, someone who believes in God and a follower of Jesus Christ. I believe that God has gifted each one of us with a set of unique talents, skills, abilities. And it is our responsibility to put forth the effort, the work, and the processes to put those talents into action. To see what those talents have the potential to become. We have been given the ability. We haven't been given the action. We have to make the decision. We have the free will to take action on the talents we have been given. We can either put our talents to work, or allow them to waste.

I've heard someone say once before, and I can't remember where I heard it. They said that the fear they have in life is that someday, they die, and they are met by this individual. That individual is who they could have become. And they meet this person who has accomplished more, who was a better friend, who was a better husband, who was a better father, who built these things, who put their talents to work, the talents they have been gifted. And when they die, they meet the person they could have been, the person they could have become, but they didn't because they allowed their talents to go to waste.

Nick Saban says, there are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment. Let that sit in for a second. Life's hard, regardless.
