That's the curse of being successful, though, right? People lean on you.
Danny Brown (0:19)
I'm successful, but on my own terms.
Joe Rogan (0:22)
Yeah, but that's still successful.
SPEAKER_3 (0:25)
Yeah, but...
Joe Rogan (0:26)
On your own terms is great.
Danny Brown (0:28)
Because, see, my shit was the music industry. And the music industry is one of those type of situations where you can be as creative as you want to be, but does that make you money? So you have this whole fucking angel and double on your shoulder.
Make a hit song or be creative as you want to be.
Joe Rogan (0:47)
Do what you want to do or do what you think is going to sell.
Danny Brown (0:50)
In my whole entire career, I just did what I wanted to do. But at this point, after 10 years, I sit back sometime and I think about like, damn, did I make a mistake?
Because it's still a lot of people in my family that struggle. It's like, fuck. If I just didn't care about being Danny Brown and being so cool and trying to make the most experimental music I could possibly make, fucking just don't give a fuck. Make that fucking hit song.
Joe Rogan (1:15)
But isn't that you though?
Danny Brown (1:17)
But I can do it.
Joe Rogan (1:18)
You could do both.
Danny Brown (1:21)
That's the whole thing of what makes you a great artist. See, like a person like Jay-Z, he does both.
Joe Rogan (1:25)
Does both, yeah.
Danny Brown (1:26)
I don't know if I can do both because it's such a drastic, it's such a drastic change from what I love as underground music and what is commercially considered to be pop music. It's such a drastic, it's such a fucking, you know what I'm saying? So I don't know if I can ever make it. It's like, with Patrice O'Neill, would he ever been a fucking, like, you know what I'm saying, commercial, like, stand-up cop? You get what I'm saying?
Joe Rogan (1:52)
No, I think he would have been.
Danny Brown (1:53)
At this point in age?
Joe Rogan (1:54)
Yeah, yeah, we would have forced it through. He would have made it.
Danny Brown (1:58)
That's the one person that I look up to.
Joe Rogan (2:00)
He was amazing.
Danny Brown (2:01)
So I look up to him so much.
Joe Rogan (2:03)
Everybody would have forced it through. Like, even if he couldn't get on a television show, even if nothing ever happened for him like that, we would have all had him on podcasts.
Danny Brown (2:12)
Because even with my rap career and just how I look at making music, I look at him as like a super inspiration. Like, it was my last album, which was called You Know What I'm Saying, which is actually from Time and Christina, because they had this bit. We had this bit where they had niggas, and you know what I'm saying? Even me, I say you know what I'm saying a lot. But before that, the name of the album was The Patrice O'Neal Theory.
Because Patrice O'Neal, he had this theory where he talked about men have periods. But we don't necessarily have periods. We just want to fuck another bitch.
So every time you mad at your girl, she's like all on you, and she's like, you're like, my woman is beautiful. You know what I'm saying? But you're like, bitch, you just want another taste of something. You get what I'm saying? You get to the point where if you've been so faithful for so long, you're like, I'll fuck a homeless bitch on the corner.
SPEAKER_3 (3:10)
You get what I'm saying?
Danny Brown (3:11)
But if I did, it's going to make me love you so much. Like, I won't have this attitude, this whole attitude I got with you. You're like, why are you so bad? Why are you acting like this?
SPEAKER_3 (3:23)
Because I need some new pussy.
Danny Brown (3:25)
And that's all that is.
Joe Rogan (3:26)
The Patrice O'Neill theory.
Danny Brown (3:28)
That's the Patrice O'Neill theory.
Joe Rogan (3:29)
He had a lot of great theories.
Danny Brown (3:30)
But I will say, listen, I'm going to say this because I love my girl at home. I know she probably listens to this.
Joe Rogan (3:34)
I love you, baby.
Danny Brown (3:39)
But no, I'm out of that. I don't have that. Don't get hurt like that, though. I'm 40 years old.
This motherfucker's been burnt out. They've been hitting this motherfucker.
SPEAKER_4 (3:49)
This motherfucker's been speed bagging this dick.
