How many times have you heard people saying that, you know, these entrepreneurs, successful people, grinders, go-getters, action takers, go, go, go. It's true, you have to take action on what you want to accomplish, and there are no room for excuses.
Petteri Lahtela (0:25)
No more complaining, no more, Mr. Kimble have to go to the bathroom, nothing.
Siim Land (0:29)
But at the same time, you have to consider your health and mental well-being. Sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep.
The most critical thing for your performance and longevity is sleep. It's actually more important than nutrition and exercise. Your body and brain repair itself only during sleep. So it doesn't matter how hard you train or how well you eat, if you still sleep like s***. That was weird. So that's what we're going to talk about in today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm your host, Siim Land. And my guest is Petteri Lahtela, the CEO of OURA Ring.
Yeah, the OURA Ring, this sleep quantification device.

Petteri Lahtela (1:44)
Thank you very much, Siim. It's nice to be here with you today.
Siim Land (1:48)
It's my pleasure. So, let's start off with what got you into entrepreneurship.
Petteri Lahtela (1:59)
My father has been an entrepreneur. Also my mother was an entrepreneur. And my brother is an entrepreneur as well.
So it's somehow, it's in our blood. And I've been entrepreneur, kind of a serial entrepreneur quite some time. So I think that's the way that I feel that I can create something that people find useful. And that's the way that I can bring something into the world that has big enough impact as well.
Siim Land (2:40)
Yeah, it's like people at the moment in the current society, being this entrepreneur is quite trendy and popular. So it's glad to see that it's not just hype for you. It's more of like a bloodline thing for you as well.
Petteri Lahtela (2:58)
Yes, yes. And also it's kind of enabling this way also to kind of create a workplace that I appreciate, but also kind of building the team that you want to work with. So it means many things for me in that sense. So I want to maximize the impact and maximize the enjoyment of doing something that I'm passionate about.
And also at the same time, enable the same for some other people around me.
Siim Land (3:40)
It's kind of like the entrepreneurs are the future world changers. They're the ones who solve the issues that mostly the governments and states, they don't either have the resources or they don't have the available knowledge, or they don't have the skills to do it. So entrepreneurship is definitely something that decentralizes the changing of the world. What led you to establishing the OURA company?
Petteri Lahtela (4:10)
Yeah, so actually, I kind of got tired on telecoms and mobile telecoms around 2004, 2005 I start feeling that this is not something that I'm passionate about.
So when I grew older and I got experience, I met lots of people in different countries and became to understand different cultures and so on. So I and at the same time, I had practiced martial arts since I was 13 And also I had some some athletic career as well. And I'm playing volleyball as a youngster winning a national championship in volleyball.
And so combining that kind of background together with the journey in the work or entrepreneurship, and then also kind of finding more meaning or willing to find some more meaning in helping people to reach their full potential and unleash their full potential. And at the same time, seeing that too many people are kind of burning out while they are trying to explore the world and to survive in the complexity of building the balance between your work life and your family life and your own health and your own passions. So it's not an easy formula to solve. So I became passionate about that, and then I was invited to another company where we developed IT systems for chronic diseases management, so prevention and management of chronic diseases. And there I learned kind of so many things about why people eventually develop chronic diseases and became intrigued and passionate about finding the solutions that how we can help people to avoid the symptoms of prolonged stress and also prevent the onset of chronic diseases. And that was one of the kind of reasons that I got the first ideas together with some of my key team partners to start developing a solution that would help people to do exactly that.
