Train by day, Joe Rogan Podcast by night, all day.
Joe Rogan (0:15)
You look exactly how I thought you were going to look. Isn't that perfect?
Jamie Vernon (0:20)
How is that?
Joe Rogan (0:21)
Good. You look like an eccentric, fun art guy.
Mike Winkelmann (0:27)
An eccentric, fun art guy. All those things are positive.
Joe Rogan (0:31)
It's all positive.
Mike Winkelmann (0:32)
I guess that's...
Joe Rogan (0:32)
It's all positive.
Mike Winkelmann (0:33)
That's actually pretty accurate right now, I guess.
Joe Rogan (0:36)
Yeah.
I guess we're right there. And I brought you in here for one specific reason.
Mike Winkelmann (0:42)
OK.
Joe Rogan (0:42)
Two reasons. One, because I think you're really talented, and I enjoy your stuff.
Mike Winkelmann (0:45)
Thank you.
Joe Rogan (0:45)
Two, because I want you to explain NFTs to me.
Mike Winkelmann (0:48)
OK.
Joe Rogan (0:49)
Jamie's tried. Everyone's tried. I've tried multiple times. And you are probably the most famous NFT guy right now. In terms of your success with NFTs, like your NFTs, what did you just hope for, like an exorbitant amount of money?
Mike Winkelmann (1:04)
We did over $100 million this year.
Joe Rogan (1:06)
$100 million. Over $100 million.
Mike Winkelmann (1:08)
Not counting like secondary sales, like just primary sales over $100 million.
Joe Rogan (1:11)
That's an incredible amount of money.
Mike Winkelmann (1:12)
Yeah, it's incredible amount of money. It's insane. Like saying that is just mind boggling to me.
I don't know what that means.
Joe Rogan (1:21)
It's like you're speaking words in French that you don't know the names, that you don't know the definitions of?
Mike Winkelmann (1:26)
It's something that I think is gonna take a long time to process because it's so new and it's something that just came out of nowhere.
Joe Rogan (1:35)
Right.
Mike Winkelmann (1:35)
Like again, I did not know of this like a year ago.
Joe Rogan (1:38)
What does it mean?
Mike Winkelmann (1:39)
What does NFT mean?
Joe Rogan (1:40)
Yeah, what does it mean? I know it's a non-fungible token, but what is that?
Mike Winkelmann (1:44)
So it's basically just a proof of sort of like ownership of something. It's really can be sort of like applied to like a bunch of different things. And to be quite honest, there's a bunch of ways you could use it. And like, I think it would be very interesting way to sort of like interact with your fans. And I think it will sort of permeate a bunch of different sort of like industries, not just art. That's just sort of the beginning of it. I think it's gonna be like email. It's gonna be like something where you don't get to be like, I don't like it. It's just gonna be like you have, it's like part of being on the internet.
Joe Rogan (2:14)
And I think it's just gonna be part of the internet.
Mike Winkelmann (2:16)
Yes.
Joe Rogan (2:16)
I've thought about doing something. This is my thought. I thought about creating like a separate branch of this company, and then having that entirely dedicated to charity.
And then just use the NFTs to generate money for charity.
Mike Winkelmann (2:31)
100%, you could do that.
Joe Rogan (2:32)
Because I'm like, it seems like a great way to just generate money for charity. It seems gross if I generate money for myself at this point in time.
But if I just generate just money for charity with that, I think it's a good idea.
Mike Winkelmann (2:45)
You could generate a lot of money. Because that's the thing, it's really just a great way to sort of organize people around a common goal. Like did you see the Constitution DAO thing?
Joe Rogan (2:53)
No.
Mike Winkelmann (2:54)
So basically there's like-
Joe Rogan (2:55)
The Constitution what thing?
Mike Winkelmann (2:56)
It's called Constitution DAO.
Joe Rogan (2:59)
Like T-A-O?
Mike Winkelmann (3:00)
No, D-A-O. D-A-O? So there's, DAOs are sort of Decentral Autonomous Organizations. And so that's another sort of like thing kind of in this NFT ecosystem.
Joe Rogan (3:11)
Hold on a second. Did you know about this? Is this a new thing for you?
Jamie Vernon (3:14)
I've tried to explain this too, once or twice, but it gets lost. I know it gets lost.
Joe Rogan (3:18)
Did you know the DAO thing?
Jamie Vernon (3:19)
I literally told you this multiple times, Joe. What the fuck?
Joe Rogan (3:23)
You never tried to explain a DAO to me, did you?
Jamie Vernon (3:26)
I wouldn't have started with that.
Mike Winkelmann (3:29)
No, no, no. It's definitely, like all these things are very new. And like, literally this is a term that pretty much came to prominence, maybe six months ago, eight months ago. Like they were around, but not that popular. Now they're becoming very popular. And so what happened is with this Constitution DAO is, people organized to buy the Constitution. It was up at like auction at Sotheby's or Christie's or one of these. And it was like $40 million.
