Howdy, welcome to Mindset Movie Reviews. If you're into movies, don't forget to like and subscribe. Let's review 17 Again. 17 Again, directed by Burr Steers and written by Jason Follati, is a comedy-drama fantasy film that attempts to blend the charm of a body switch movie with the trials of midlife crises.

Released in 2009, the film stars Zac Efron, Leslie Mann and Matthew Perry and is rated PG-13.

The plot revolves around Mike O'Donnell, who at 17 was a high school basketball star with a promising future.

However, his life takes a turn when his girlfriend, Scarlett, reveals she is pregnant.

Fast forward 20 years and Mike, now played by Matthew Perry, is a disillusioned adult facing a divorce, estranged from his children and stuck in a dead-end job. A chance encounter with a mystical janitor leads to Mike being transformed back into his 17 year old self, played by Zac Efron, giving him a second chance to relive his youth and potentially fix his life. The film's premise is reminiscent of classic body switch comedies like Freaky Friday and Big, but it struggles to capture the same magic. While Zac Efron delivers a charismatic performance showcasing his potential as a leading man, the film's execution leaves much to be desired. The narrative is predictable and the humour often falls flat, relying heavily on cliches and a lack of originality. The film attempts to explore themes of regret and redemption, but its message is muddled by a series of awkward and sometimes uncomfortable scenarios. One of the film's strengths is Efron's ability to carry the movie with his charm and comedic timing. His portrayal of a teenager with the mind of an adult is both engaging and entertaining, providing some of the film's more enjoyable moments. However, the supporting characters, particularly the female roles, are underdeveloped and often portrayed in a negative light. Leslie Mann's character, Scarlett, is depicted as a desperate woman seeking validation, while the teenage daughter, Maggie, is reduced to a one-dimensional character with little agency. The film's comedic subplot involving Mike's best friend Ned, played by Thomas Lennon and his pursuit of the school principal, adds little to the overall narrative and feels forced. The humour in these scenes is often juvenile and fails to resonate with the intended audience. Additionally, the film's handling of sensitive topics such as teenage pregnancy and abstinence is clumsy and lacks the nuance needed to address these issues effectively.

In summary, 17 Again is a film that struggles to find its footing. While Zac Efron's performance is a highlight, the film's lack of originality and its problematic portrayal of female characters detract from its overall appeal. It is a light-hearted, inoffensive movie that may entertain younger audiences, but falls short of being a memorable addition to the body switch genre. And that concludes my review of 17 Again, and I'm giving it 2.5 stars out of a maximum of 5 stars. Thanks for listening.
