Three, two, one, boom, and we're live. How are you? What's going on?
Eddie Izzard (0:05)
I'm good. I'm pouring coffee in the first seconds.
Joe Rogan (0:08)
Perfect.
Eddie Izzard (0:08)
Of our chat.
Joe Rogan (0:09)
That's a good way to do it.
Eddie Izzard (0:10)
With a cafetier, I think it is. I think that's named in a French way.
Joe Rogan (0:15)
A French press, that's what they're called?
Eddie Izzard (0:16)
Is it called? Well, I think it's called a cafetier, but it's probably called a pot of coffee.
Joe Rogan (0:20)
That makes sense. But there's a French word for it that we just ignore here in America.
Eddie Izzard (0:24)
They did a lot of the food. You know, because you have herbs, you know herbs?
And I used to do this bit of material, which I really enjoyed saying, you know, the difference between British and American, you say this, you say that, and you say herbs and we say herbs, because there's a fucking H in it.
Joe Rogan (0:43)
Right.
Eddie Izzard (0:43)
And I used to say, there's a fucking H. But, and I thought, why has the H dropped off for America? I think it's because a lot of French guys would have come over, immigration, and they would have done a lot of cooking.
You know, these French guys know about cooking, and they do the elbs, and they cut the H off totally. So I think that was an influence from that.
Joe Rogan (1:00)
Probably Julia Child.
Eddie Izzard (1:02)
Julia Child, was she French?
Joe Rogan (1:03)
Yeah, I think. Wasn't she?
Eddie Izzard (1:05)
She is now.
Joe Rogan (1:05)
I mean, she was into French cooking.
Eddie Izzard (1:07)
All right, okay. Lafayette, maybe Lafayette is sitting next to Washington, saying, we will use elbs with this stuff here, and then we could do the Revolutionary War, and then you guys will win, and then we'll hate each other forever.
Joe Rogan (1:19)
Well, you guys also do a lot of weird stuff, where you put like a U in color, and you have a Y in tires.
Eddie Izzard (1:26)
What do you put in tires? You put an I?
Joe Rogan (1:27)
T-I, R-E-S.
Eddie Izzard (1:29)
Yeah, I think we had first dibs on the Lagerwitz.
Joe Rogan (1:32)
Yeah, I don't understand what we did to it.
Eddie Izzard (1:33)
No, you guys got on the Mayflower, and they said, okay, we're gonna talk like this, from now on, we're gonna say woo, a lot, and we're gonna get rid of the Y in tires. We're gonna invent tires, get rid of the Y. Yeah, I just think the U in color and honor, is the U in honor as well, and we've got it and you've got it out. I think yours is more logical.
Joe Rogan (1:55)
Honor, for honor.
Eddie Izzard (1:56)
Yeah.
Joe Rogan (1:56)
But not for herbs.
Eddie Izzard (1:58)
No, herbs is, I think that's more French influence.
Joe Rogan (2:00)
I agree. Yeah, I always wondered, because I grew up in Boston, and I always wondered, those were the first people to leave England and Europe. What the fuck happened to their language, because they developed the most disgusting brand of it.
Eddie Izzard (2:13)
Well, you've got your A's, your Boston A's, which I can't hear a strong Boston coming out of you.
Joe Rogan (2:17)
Yeah, I got rid of it. I heard myself on television once when I was like 19 years old. I was like, holy shit, what is that?
Eddie Izzard (2:24)
Well, you guys had, or you used to have, the mother, father, brother, sister, pack, and it's the A.
And we say mother, mother, father, sister. We don't have an R at the end of our mother, brother, father, sister. And you, in Boston, yeah, we say mother, instead of mother.
And the rest of America has a much stronger A. And Ireland has that, that's a very Irish-influenced thing. And for us, the R, when we're playing, when I'm playing American, when I was doing roles like that, the R was the hardest thing to get. Hard, hard tar. I remember a friend saying, hey, I was cooking this thing, and it came out like hard, hard tar. And I thought, that is the one to practice, because that is just hard, hard tar. We called it hard, hard tar, which just doesn't sound the same.
Joe Rogan (3:09)
You spend a lot of time over here. The only time I've ever spent in England is working. Like, a little bit of downtime, doing stand-up and hanging out over there, but most of it has just been working, either working for the UFC or... I never really get a chance to really spend time in England. I'd like to. I'd like to do that just to kind of understand you folks.
