#119 Dangers of Lactic Acidosis in Cancer and Ketosis - Dr Darren Schmidt
Siim Land Podcast
May 24, 2019
Cancer is a very difficult disease with many reasons it happens. A lot of it has to do with stagnation, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the body.

You can have muscle cells starving and dying in your chest, and the peck muscles tighten up, and then the diaphragm tightens up, and the muscles between the ribs tighten up. Now they can't breathe because they have toxicity in their blood, and they have a deficiency of oxygen in their blood. And those two combinations create cell starvation and cell death.
And the main symptom of this is when the muscle cells are dying, they tighten up.

Darren Schmidt (1:02)
Thanks for having me, I appreciate it.
Siim Land (1:04)
Yeah, I too enjoy a lot of your videos and you go really into the science and the physiology, which I would imagine most practitioners and doctors don't even know that much about. So maybe kind of give like a short backstory of how did you got involved into the field of medicine and what's your story?
Darren Schmidt (1:25)
Well, I was raised on a farm and I was trying to decide like what to do with my life. I figured I want to be a doctor or something and I explored conventional medicine, podiatry, veterinary medicine. Then I spent a couple of hours with a chiropractor in my hometown and what he showed me was pretty holistic and having been a farmer before that, you know, I had that holistic viewpoint, like you plant seed now and later it grows. And this chiropractor was showing me that you can have a pain in the leg caused by something going on in the back.
And I said, well, I can think that way. So I went to the chiropractic school. And I was studying physiology quite a bit, like three years ago when I had my own case of black mold or toxic mold poisoning that landed in my heart, my chest. And I stumbled upon a solution for that. That was created in the early 1930s. And so I had to study like what they knew back then. And that's where I got a lot of the physiology that I know and I apply right now. I mean, I know a lot of physiology from school and from being in practice for 21 or 22 years now. But it was like when I was able to figure out lactic acidosis, which is the physiology of dying.
Then I was able to apply it more easily with my patients to get greater results.
Siim Land (2:48)
Wow, that's quite interesting. So you mentioned lactic acidosis.
So what is that and how does it relate to disease development?
Darren Schmidt (2:58)
Yeah, so there's two definitions of lactic acidosis. The first one originated in the 1840s and sort of stopped in 1960
And there's some literature on it up to 1976
But then the definition changed.
And now it's only applied in two situations. One is people who are athletic. And the other one is people who have like five days left to live. And both of those people can have high lactate in the blood. So for example, I tested my own blood yesterday and my lactate level was 1.5 and the normal range is 0.5 to 1 So my lactate is high in my blood because I worked out the day before for an hour and a half in the gym and I tore up my muscles and that caused lactic acidosis, which is fine if you're an athlete and your body handles it and it actually uses lactate as a fuel. But when somebody is sick with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and they're in the hospital, they're dying, the lactate will go very high also, it can go up to 20, 25 and it's not a good sign at all. There's studies showing that people with really high lactate like that, they're all causing cause mortality so much higher and there's no solution in medicine to bring it down. They try to give them baking soda or something to reduce the acidic part. So what it is, it's when you look at it like from 100 years ago, it's dirty blood that's hypoxic so it doesn't have enough oxygen. So it could be high lactate or high other chemicals such as ethanol, acid aldehyde and these are waste products that the body makes from burning sugar and also another waste product is hydrogen which is acid. You add the term lactate plus acid, that's how they came up with lactic acidosis.
