Well, the window that gives us a nice view into the depths of hell has produced another wonderful documentary. It feels like what Netflix is these days. It's like, here's a window into the worst possible human beings that walk the planet. We just got done with Mackenzie Schiarelli on The Crash, and now we're over here to Maternal Instinct. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse. Oh my God. We're going to talk in depth about it this week, this case, Maternal Instinct, and everything involved with it. Siobhan Scott, psychotherapist and author, a good friend of the show. She's going to be on with us on Wednesday Morning Live. Yes, Wednesday Morning Live. And we'll be breaking down this case in great detail from a psychotherapist standpoint. But in case you haven't had the privilege of consuming this show as of yet, or this documentary as of yet, let me get you caught up.
Grab a drink. You might need it. Reagan Simmons-Hancock was 21 years old. She lived in New Boston, Texas. A town so small, everybody knows everybody. It starts the story, starts like a small town in Texas. Most people like the atmosphere of this community. She married a man named Homer Hancock in September 2019 She had a three-year-old daughter named Kinley. She was weeks away from delivering her second daughter, a girl she and Homer had already named Braxlynn Sage. Her mother, Jessica Brooks, called her Mama Bear. Her sister, Emily, said Reagan and Kinley were inseparable, each other's world from the beginning. Reagan was young and she was building a life and she was doing it the way people do in small towns in East Texas. Just one step at a time surrounded by family with a baby on the way. In the fall of 2019, Reagan hired a photographer for her wedding. The woman showed up, charmed every person in the room, jumped into family selfies, made everyone feel like she'd known them for years. Emily said it felt less like hiring a stranger and more like gaining a bridesmaid. Reagan liked her, trusted her, let her know her life. A year later, that photographer drove to Reagan's house and killed her.
Cut her nearly full term baby from her body, put the infant in her lap and drove toward Oklahoma. Surprise, the baby did not survive. The photographer's name was Taylor Parker. She is now on death row in Texas. Meet Taylor Parker. The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear her case and Reagan's family is fighting to make sure the system that failed their daughter, the system where people knew what Parker was.
The law said they couldn't speak.
Never fails anyone else. This comes down to someone being afraid of a HIPAA law violation.
A violation that would have saved a life. Millions of people are seeing the story for the first time through Netflix, Maternal Instinct. And what most people don't know yet, what the documentary only begins to get at is that people in Taylor Parker's own life, including her own doctor, knew she could not be pregnant. They tried to raise the alarm and the system stopped them. That's a piece of this that we're going to be getting to. And it changes the way you understand everything that happened. This is another onion of a story. Lots of layers to peel back. Taylor Parker's entire life was fabrication. The pregnancy that ended in Reagan's murder was not the beginning of her deception. It was the end of a chain that stretched back years and touched every person who got close to her. Parker had a tubal ligation in 2014, hysterectomy in 2015, and complications from an ectopic pregnancy. She could not get pregnant. That's a medical fact. There is no version of biology where this is possible. But she kept telling people she was. She faked a pregnancy with her ex-husband. She faked a twin pregnancy when she first met a man named Wade Griffin at a Texas rodeo in 2019 When someone asked how pregnancy was possible after a hysterectomy, she allegedly told them, it was a miracle that all her stuff grew back.
