On July 16th, the Nationals just locked down their first draft pick under the new front office leadership.
We're talking about Chris Hacopian, who went 11th overall. He signed his contract right there in his hometown at the ballpark on Wednesday.
It was a big deal, even got a stadium tour with his folks.
Hacopian is a 21-year-old second baseman coming out of Texas A&M. This marks the first player signed by the Nats since Paul Toboni took over as president of baseball operations this past off season. Toboni even mentioned how cool it is that Hacopian is from the DMV area, making that drive to sign feel extra special. This kid was ranked number 14 by MLB Pipeline before the draft. This past year at Texas A&M, he was hitting 319 with 10 doubles, 11 homers, and drove in 41 runs. He even earned first team All-Southeastern Conference honors for his performance. Before Texas A&M, Hacopian played his first two college seasons at the University of Maryland. Fun fact, his dad also played there before getting drafted by Cleveland way back in 1992 Hacopian himself grew up a Nats fan, admiring players like Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa. He played high school ball in Potomac, Maryland, and was even named the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022 So yeah, this is a homecoming of sorts for the young ballplayer.
