All right, let's open the Bible today, James chapter three. Happy Father's Day to all the dads and those watching online this morning. James chapter three, we're continuing our series called Faith With No Filter. And today, we're in James chapter three, verse number one. I'm going to read 12 verses today. So if you brought a Bible, how many brought a real Bible? Anybody bring a Bible? Look at you people. Come on somebody. How many of you brought the glow in the dark ones? Come on. I see it glowing, right? There's a good one. I see it right there glowing. You can see it on your face, you know, when it glows, right? You see it. Anyway, all right, James chapter three, verse one. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, but you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. That's a wonderful verse. Verse two, for we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man. Notice what he says. He says, anyone who does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If you put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue, so also is the tongue, is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire. And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body. Setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. That's another good one. Verse seven. For every kind of beast and bird and reptile and sea creature can be tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing, my brothers. These things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. Have you ever typed out a text message, read it three times, and thought, yep, that's exactly what I want to say? You type it out, and then five minutes later, you thought, that was not exactly what I wanted to say, but you had already hit send? Come on, somebody. You're like, try to get it back, and you try to hit that portion where you're like, undo send, but it still says, they may see it. I hate that part.
And you hit it too fast, and it says deliver. Or maybe today, you're married in the room, and your spouse says things like this, do whatever you want.
Like, you have this relationship, and you're married, and you say, hey, listen, I'd like to do this, or I'd like to go here, and can I go here or do this? And they're like, do whatever you wanna do. How many know that's a trap? You cannot, that is a trap. You cannot, do whatever you wanna do is not a thing to lean into. It is a trap. It will come back to bite you later. If you're a parent and you're a child, you're trying to be a godly parent. Any godly parents in here, you're like, I'm just gonna raise my kids in the love and the admonition of the Lord. And then they ask you, this 3700th time, when you ask them to do something, they use the word why?
Because I said so. That's where we're at these days. You know what I'm saying? I have two adult children, and I am a papaw now. Praise the Lord, everybody. So, thank you for the three claps. I am an amazing papaw, by the way.
But I have a 14-year-old, and so I'm going through the teenage years again. He's gonna be a freshman in high school, and I'm going through that again, and I'm just like, hey man, I said de-weed the flower bed. Well, why? Because I said so. There's no other reason. Come on, somebody. You know what I'm talking about? That word why drives me crazy, because I'm like, you pay no rent here. What is wrong with you? You want to eat? Then you go out and do the flower bed, because I don't want to. Amen.
