Here's our host, Karl Landau.

Welcome to the Landau Tiki Bar and the I Used to be Somebody Show. I want to thank this month's sponsors. Thank you, Capital Advantage Wealth Management. I particularly like working with them because they're a medium-sized money management company. Not one of those giant institutional companies where you're a number, but also not a one-person outfit with limited services. You have a whole team that creates a custom program for you.
Thank you to the friend of the podcast, Gary Serac, who wrote a wonderful book called How to Retire and Not Die. I truly believe it's the best retirement book you can read. Our big news is that we've sold out our September Tuscany I Used to Be Somebody Tour. If you're still interested, please contact me and I can put you on top of the waiting list. The other big news is that we just announced our 2025 trip to Portugal. It will take place April 27th through May 3rd, 2025 My wife, Diana, and I just toured Portugal and totally fell in love with it. So please check out the Pickleball Media HQ website for details.
After today's interview, we've got a great segment from the Unretirement Wisdom Pros. Today, we talk about new lifestyle in retirement.
And as I mentioned last month that Monard had retired from teaching Pickleball, so we started a new segment, Pickleball Chronicles with Trevor. Being dyslectic, which I know I can't pronounce correctly, I have a problem saying Trevor. I want to so desperately say Trevor. We talk about that and the crazy world of Pickleball players feet. It's hilarious.
You're in for a real treat today. Today's interview is with a well-known former columnist for the New York Times. It's Adam Bryant, who created and wrote the column Corner Office, in which he ended up interviewing over 500 CEOs. What he learned during these interviews is fascinating and can help you all in your journey of creating a great second act. He shares his personal experience when he gave up his dream job at the New York Times after 20 years and started his own C-suite position. Sit back and enjoy my interview with Adam Bryant.

I think that's a common pattern with successful people, that they are so good at putting their head down and muscling through all the things that they should do and need to do. The simple question, what do you want to do, is really uncomfortable for them.
So I always sort of say, like, give yourself some time, quiet room, stare this difficult question in the face. What do you want to do, not what you should do or need to do?
**Carl Landau** (3:29)
Hi, Adam, welcome to the I Used to be Somebody show.
**Adam Bryant** (3:32)
Thanks, Carl, looking forward to it.
**Carl Landau** (3:34)
Are you in New Orleans now?
**Adam Bryant** (3:35)
I am, yeah. We moved here about three years ago during the pandemic. Our two daughters moved here and they said we're digging in, so we said we're coming too. So it's been a great new chapter.
**Carl Landau** (3:45)
Oh, that's awesome. It's one of my favorite cities in the world.
And so I did a little research about you and I ran into a couple other Adam Bryant's, particularly in the image department. Do you know the other Adam Bryant's that are famous?
**Adam Bryant** (4:02)
I'm going to defer to you. I don't have a lock on that name and I know there's some other famous.
**Carl Landau** (4:09)
No, no, no, no. You come up first. You do a really good job. Your Google search is excellent. But one of them is, I couldn't quite figure out like some sort of actor and he played a pro wrestler.
There's also a professional male model. So in the images, you're the only one with wearing a shirt.
I'm assuming you're wearing a shirt now, right?
**Adam Bryant** (4:32)
I am. I feel like this conversation is instantly going off course, but I'll again.
**Carl Landau** (4:38)
Adam, I just want to introduce you to the audience. Adam Bryant worked for 30 years as a journalist, including 18 years as a reporter, an editor and columnist at the New York Times.
He's probably most famous for his column at the Times called Corner Office, where he interviewed more than 500 CEOs. He's author of four books, including the New York Times bestseller at the Corner Office. His most recent book is The Leap to Leader, published by Harvard Business Review.
