Hammer and Nigel.
**Tonya Terry** (0:01)
You believe these characters?
**Nigel** (0:02)
They're weird of us.
**Tonya Terry** (0:05)
Well, I'm proud to say that our detectives have made an arrest. I'm frustrated and disheartened to tell you that the person we believe responsible for this is a 14-year-old child.
**Nigel** (0:16)
Wow, IMPD Chief Tonya Terry right there, Hammer.
My name is Nigel, that's Jason Hammer right over there, talking about the 14-year-old that's arrested, been arrested for the murder of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham and at the parking garage before the Indians game downtown last weekend. Awful, awful, awful story.
**Jason Hammer** (0:36)
This was a story that came down yesterday toward the end of our program. 14
**Nigel** (0:44)
Yeah, I got a 14 years old and a 14 year old.
**Jason Hammer** (0:48)
Could you imagine him walking around not only with a firearm, but having the confidence to use it for a murder? I mean, to common, decent people, this is unbelievable. But unfortunately, here in Indianapolis and Marion County, it's a trend. Not only is it believable, but it's become a trend. Now, detectives were working with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. They're going to make the final charging decisions in this case.
I see a lot of people, Nigel, and there was a little bit of this in the statement from the IMPD saying that there's almost sympathy for the shooter here because of the circumstance, because he's 14
**Nigel** (1:36)
Oh, yeah, there's a lot of heartbreak to go around.
**Jason Hammer** (1:39)
Right. Basically, here's the statement from the IMPD that was put out on social media. Just a part of it. Quote. While today's arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever.
With all due respect, I don't give a blue rat's ass about this 14-year-old. I hope he's prosecuted as an adult.
I hope he spends the rest of his life behind bars. I never, ever want to see this creep, this rotten little SOB have one day of freedom as long as he's alive. And if that makes me the bad guy, say hello to the bad guy.
**Nigel** (2:31)
He'll be out by the time he's 50 He'll spend his time in juvie until he's 18 where after that he'll go to an adult facility. That's my prediction.
**Jason Hammer** (2:42)
You do an adult crime, you should do adult time.
**Nigel** (2:45)
Sure.
**Jason Hammer** (2:46)
He knows the difference between right and wrong. This wasn't a six-year-old, right? This wasn't a baby walking around with a gun. You're 14, you know the difference from right and wrong.
**Nigel** (2:57)
If you have the ability to walk up to another human being and put a gun to their head and pull the trigger, allegedly, then you have the ability to discern from right and wrong. Okay? I don't care how old you are.
**Jason Hammer** (3:14)
Also, in a press conference earlier today, IMPD Chief Tanya Terry said, she agrees that parents need to be held criminally liable when it comes to these types of situations.
Like, I'm all in on this. Now, it's easier said than done. One, when you've got a soft on crime prosecutor, like Ryan Mears, he's going to be almost like a defense attorney instead of a prosecutor.
And the fact that he's 14, you're going to have so many groups and people protesting, saying that he's just a kid. Kids make mistakes. I'm sorry. This isn't a mistake. A mistake is you stole a car.
A mistake is you robbed a store. Cold blooded murder in the middle of the afternoon, that's something that you need to be held accountable for as an adult.
**Nigel** (4:11)
I bet defense attorneys are going to use the mistake angle.
If I had to place bets, man, I think they're going to say, oh, this was an accidental shooting. They didn't mean to. They were just going to scare him. The gun accidentally went off. Just watch for all those excuses coming up in the next few weeks. That's my prediction anyway. If I'm wrong, I'll say I'm wrong.
**Jason Hammer** (4:32)
I just I'm floored with how many people, including some in the media, that feel like there are multiple victims in this thing. This 14-year-old is not a victim. He's the perpetrator. And I hope this rotten SOB spends the rest of his life behind bars. And I will not apologize for that.
There is a problem, though, Nigel Marion County of juvenile violence. These situations are becoming more and more common in the last month alone. Four juveniles have been arrested for murder in Indianapolis. Four juveniles in one month. Now, yesterday, again, this was a story that flew under the radar because of the big news of the arrest. Officers were dispatched on a report of a person shot here in Indy. Upon arrival, a 12-year-old male was upstairs in a bedroom, laying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the backside of his upper leg.
