Every man is two men, one who's asleep in the light, and the other who's awake in the darkness.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:12)
My guest today is Aubrey Marcus, founder of Onnit, a health and fitness company he built around the idea of total human optimization.
**Aubrey Marcus** (0:20)
Not making a choice is a choice. Choices are unavoidable. At some point, you have to actually do something.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:27)
You might know him from his podcast or his book, Own the Day, Own Your Life, and his documentary is exploring plant-based medicines.
**Aubrey Marcus** (0:34)
Like I can't separate Aubrey from the psychedelic medicine journeys that I've had. It's shaped me in such a profound way. And then connecting you to something that's bigger than yourself. You know, something where you can actually drop to your knees and go, wow, what a blessing.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:51)
He's all about peak performance, consciousness, and what it means to be a human being.
**Aubrey Marcus** (0:56)
Your ego doesn't have to disappear. It just has to transfigure and transform into your unique self. Nobody else will ever be, you know, after I was successful with Onnit and best-selling book and all of these different things. Someone came up to my mom and was like, aren't you so proud of your son? And she just looks at him cold in the eye and goes, what do you mean? I've always been proud of my son.
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:17)
What drew me to Aubrey is that he's gone deep and he's willing to talk about where it's gone right and where it's gone wrong. If someone has never tried a psychedelic, what would be the steps that you would encourage them to take so that they can have a positive and safe experience?
**Aubrey Marcus** (1:33)
The first thing that you can do is actually just-
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:45)
Aubrey, welcome to No Magic Pill.
**Aubrey Marcus** (1:46)
Pleasure to be here.
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:47)
This is so exciting. Well, first off, what's it like? You're four weeks into the dad life. What's the thing that's been most surprising? And then what's been the least surprising about the experience so far?
**Aubrey Marcus** (1:58)
Whenever somebody hypes something, I always fade the hype, right? I think like, it's not going to be like that. When everybody says that moment your daughter's born, it's going to change your life.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:08)
Yeah.
**Aubrey Marcus** (2:08)
And I was like, yeah, maybe. Because I've imagined it in my head so many times.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:12)
Yeah.
**Aubrey Marcus** (2:12)
Then it happened. And I was like, oh, they were right. Yeah. For sure. At that moment, something else clicks and almost like a latent epigenetic code just switches on.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:23)
Interesting.
**Aubrey Marcus** (2:23)
And I was like, all right, how's the kingdom? Okay. How's the world?
Okay. How's my daughter? How's my wife? Not necessarily in that order, but everything crashed in all at once. And it was super clarifying and also wildly heart opening.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:39)
You said right before we sat down that you've always cared about the future, but more so now because you have skin in the game.
**Aubrey Marcus** (2:46)
That's right.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:47)
I thought that was a great, that's a line that I'm definitely going to be using again.
**Aubrey Marcus** (2:51)
Yeah. I mean, it's people talk about caring for life, caring for the world, caring for the trajectory of humanity. But if you don't have kids, are you really making that bet?
**Blake Mycoskie** (3:01)
Yeah.
**Aubrey Marcus** (3:02)
Are you just talking about it? Yeah. And I respect everybody's choices of how they want to build a family or not. However, I think there's something really important about saying like, no, this is my bet on the future. Not only am I going to work to make the future a future that is worthy of my daughter and a future that can hold her in a kind of peaceful, loving embrace, but also I want to train my daughter to be one of the, you know, cause makers, one of the change makers of the next generation.
**Blake Mycoskie** (3:28)
And how cool is it you get to now take all the stuff that you've been writing about and speaking about and having on your podcast, all the learnings that you now get to share them with, you know, someone you really get to help mold. I mean, that is to me the coolest thing. Like when I see my 11 year old do something that I'm really proud of and I can trace it back to like, oh, I remember that conversation a few years ago where we talked about the importance of this, you know, and then he does it and it's like, oh, this is so cool. It actually, all that work really does work. I spoke at the intro about total human optimization. When I heard that phrase, I was like, I'm really excited to hear how Aubrey defines that.
