Lemonada. We're living in a system that just wants to polish the hood when there's something going on in the engine.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:11)
When we worked together, you were inviting me to look at the engine, and instead, I ended up looking for a magic pill, and it really almost killed me. The world's top athletes, CEOs, and musicians have every resource available to them.
But when they quietly start to fall apart, who do many of them call? Paul Conti. Paul trained at Stanford and Harvard. He built a reputation as one of the most sought after psychiatrists in the world, not because he manages symptoms, but because he actually gets to the bottom of things.
**Paul Conti** (0:48)
A lot of what I do for a living is detective work.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:50)
I'm thinking of the way that you ask questions, it's very much a Sherlock Holmes.
**Paul Conti** (0:54)
I'm going to get myself one of those pipes. A little monocle.
**Blake Mycoskie** (0:57)
Lady Gaga said he saved her life. Rick Rubin calls him one of the people he's most grateful to know.
And Kevin Love has spoken about the profound impact Paul's work has had on his life as well.
**Paul Conti** (1:12)
I think that as human beings, we want to understand. And if we understand something, then we're not afraid anymore.
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:19)
What Paul offers is deceptively simple. He wants to help you figure out why you do what you do.
And he won't let you leave until you're closer to an honest answer.
**Paul Conti** (1:30)
We are so afraid to look at our mental health, right? Because we're afraid of what we're going to find. Why might it be that I have all of this going for me, but I don't feel good and I want to understand that?
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:41)
For those who want to start that work on their own, he's written a remarkable new book called What's Going Right.
**Paul Conti** (1:48)
It doesn't mean that we don't want to look hard at ourselves, but the way that we get there is by starting with what's right.
**Blake Mycoskie** (1:54)
It has helped me immensely on my own healing journey. Now, I've been willing to have this conversation for a long time, and I know that this might be one of the most personal and helpful episodes we ever release.
Before we start the show, I want to share that at the end of this episode, I will be giving everyone watching and listening an Enough Bracelet. The Enough Bracelet has been a great tool for me on my journey, and sharing it with others is one of my greatest joys. So enjoy this conversation, and stick around at the end for details on how you can receive an Enough Bracelet from me as well. So Paul, welcome to No Magic Pill.
**Paul Conti** (2:38)
Thank you. Thank you so much for having me, and thank you for that kind introduction.
**Blake Mycoskie** (2:42)
Before we get started, I want to understand what is your why? Like, why did you get into this work?
**Paul Conti** (2:47)
I think I've always valued understanding. I think that as human beings, we want to understand, and if we understand something, then we're not afraid anymore, and we're willing to look right at it. Understanding is a way that can make a lot of difference.
**Blake Mycoskie** (3:01)
Yeah. And also, you lost your brother at a young age, right?
**Paul Conti** (3:05)
Yes. He was 20 years old, and I was 25, and he was having mental health issues, and they weren't understood or addressed. In fact, there was no mechanism for even seeking help, let alone gaining what he would have needed.
So, that really has stuck with me, the avoidability of a lot of the tragedies that we face.
**Blake Mycoskie** (3:26)
That's exactly why I'm doing this podcast, like the avoidability of tragedies.
As you know, and as we worked together in the past, I went through a really hard time, and it could have ended really badly. And I feel very blessed and lucky that I got the help that I needed. And in the process, I tried so many different things, and I realized that there wasn't a magic pill, as much as I wanted there to be one. And so, this show and our conversation today is really in service of anyone who might be listening or watching that feels stuck, feels depressed, feels numb, and they might be feeling really lonely in those feelings, and they might not have access to an amazing therapist like yourself. Really, I'm kind of trying to create this episode really around the idea that we're having this conversation and sharing what you're sharing in your new book for someone who might be in that place and to potentially help avoid something bad happening.
