Me, Chris McMonigle here is your host. And today we get to talk about a victory, even though it was a losing series against the Dodgers and ultimately, listen, you don't feel good. I don't know how you feel good about it. I'm not going to go as far as many. I'm sure many of you are talking, you know, the embarrassment, I don't feel embarrassed off of this series. They played a tight game Friday night. A game got out of hand but was relatively a close game in the first game of the double header. And they win a tight game tonight. But that doesn't change the fact that the obvious thing to talk about is the offense sucks.
Like, that's the obvious thing right now. This offense is atrocious. Top to bottom, soup to nuts, as my father and Francesse used to say. Soup to nuts, this offense is just absolutely awful. And even in a victory tonight, which listen, is still a much needed victory. And they lost two out of three to the best team in baseball. And you're talking about one or two situations in the first game of the series from taking the series. So, ultimately, it's not even so much about the measuring stick that we want to use the Dodgers as, because, yeah, the Dodgers are the best team in baseball. They're the best team in baseball right now. They're back-to-back defending World Series champions. The Yankees are not as good as the Dodgers. I don't care if they want to win all three games. They're not as good as the Dodgers. So we know that going in. It's a little bit of a litmus test. You want to play well, coming off winning four straight, going into the All-Star break. And I thought the first game, outside of the offense being dog crap, which is the story of the entire series, and of the last 28 games or whatever it is now without Aaron Judge.
I thought they played a, for the most part, good brand of baseball. They just don't hit. Like I know everyone's going to go nuts. They lost two balls in the sun. I get it in the first game of this doubleheader. They lost two balls in the sun. Pa has lost one in center field as well. Like it's one of those days it was hard to see they lost two balls in the sun. But outside of that, it's not that they played poorly. They don't hit. They're not hitting. This lineup is awful. The bottom of the lineup is awful. And Bellinger outside of the RBI in the first inning today is just not good enough. Bellinger is a guy who was the entire Yankee season off season. And I know I harp on Bellinger a lot. But he's got to be one of the guys carrying them. And right now, outside of today's hit, I know he won the All-Star Game MVP, great, great. But this offense continues to struggle. And he's at the core of it for me because he's got to be better. Jazz is another guy. Tonight, he hits the big home run that gives them a win. And oddly enough, as bad as Jazz has been, and there's no doubt, it has been a massive disappointment of a season for Jazz Chisholm. I don't think there's any way around it. His OPS is under 700 That's unacceptable for Jazz. This is a 30-30 player. He's having an awful season. I put him right there with Bellinger as the main reasons this offense thinks, I know everything needs to get better and we'll get to it. Come the trade deadline, the Yankees have a lot of things they need to improve.
At some point, I want the dynamic player, but I also think they need, even if it's minor upgrades, they need minor upgrades all over the place. I don't know if they can go into the postseason with this shortstop position, because I know we were all clamoring for Caballero to start every day at shortstop, myself included. First one, first one to tell you, Caballero has to be the starting shortstop, I said it a bunch. He stinks. He's not any good. This is why I found it funny early on, and I said, hey, give Volpe a chance while he's hitting, and then it just felt like they played better with Caballero, and I was tired of not seeing double plays turned. So I was like, Cabby's got to play, Cabby's got to play. Caballero sucks. Let's be honest. I'm sorry. He stinks, along with McMahon, along with everybody else at the bottom of that ladder, along with Wells. Caballero stinks, and I'm tired of him playing the game. How about worrying about you're at bat instead of worrying about whether you'll look up at 7 or 8 seconds, and if the umpire is going to hold the picture to the letter of the law every single at bat. Like, it's getting obnoxious while he's not freaking producing. Like, the Yankees need an upgraded shortstop. They could use an upgraded third, although McMahon has been better double tonight. They need, again, I don't know if it's necessarily an upgrade over Jazz Chisholm. They just need a different player. They need a different type of player than Jazz Chisholm, possibly at second base. I mean, those are a lot of things to change. I don't know if they're going to get a lot of things to change, but like, this, the offense is just absolutely atrocious. Outside of Rice and Grisham, and yes, I'm going to be a proponent for Grisham. I think he's good.
