Wally Backman Tells Carton and Big Mac He Can Fix the Mets

And for you MET fans, what the F? The owner once again going after the fan base? It is only public comments basically this year. It's always an attack on the fan base. If you don't like $50 parking, I've got $40 parking for you. Because that's the way to rally people around a bad franchise. Oh, I got a better idea. Let's have Mr. MET celebrate the firing of Carlos Mendoza. You morons. We got lots cooking today. And I'm here for all of it. Good afternoon, Big Mac. How are you today, Ken?

I've been better, but it is beautiful out. It is the summer.

**Craig Carton** (1:07)
Gorgeous, gorgeous.
Monday afternoon, the Yankees have now lost four consecutive games. Get swept by the lowly last place balls and Red Sox.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:16)
Last night was a disaster. What a punch that was.

**Craig Carton** (1:19)
Oh, we take the lead late. Oh, no. What's going to happen? I know what's going to happen.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:26)
Everybody knows what's going to happen.

**Craig Carton** (1:27)
That's right.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:28)
They're going to have a miserable June. They're going to somehow rally. They're going to lose in the postseason. Everybody's telling me.

**Craig Carton** (1:33)
Oh, is that the way this goes?

**Chris McMonigle** (1:34)
That's pretty much how it goes. That's the Yankee season. Everyone's resigned to it. Every Yankee fan understands that's what's going on here. We expected this loss to Boston. They expect this team to be lousy, but still manage their way to get into the postseason. And then they'll show up small in the postseason and lose. It's a guaranteed. It's a way of life. It's what the Yankees are and are doing.

That's what they do.

And to expect anything else is just silly. But having said all of that, what an ugly freaking weekend for the New York Yankees.

**Craig Carton** (1:58)
I'm not sure which team had a worse weekend to be honest. I know the Yankees lose four straight, get swept by the Red Sox, and now they're out of first place. I'm arguing it's actually an interesting conversation. Who had a worse weekend? The New York Yankees getting swept, right, out of first place now.
Or the New York Mets, whose owner again comes across, this is not all the time with him, but every now and then comes across like Marie Antoinette. Like he has a complete lack of understanding of the fan base he claims to know and love and be a part of. Look, the reality is that he's not. And that's not unique to him. If you're worth $15-20 billion, how could you possibly relate to somebody that's complaining about, you know, $40 or $50 for parking? You can't. You may have grown up a certain way, but when you're rich for that long, many billionaires lose sight of what average blue-collar America goes through. Like, even white-collar America can't compete with that kind of money, right? Yeah. So let me start with the Mets. We'll get to the Yankees, of course. The Yankees don't have the same problems the Mets have.
The New York Mets need to sit the owner down. I know it's very hard to do because everybody works for them. And walk him through why his, what he thinks are funny, I guess, or interesting tweets do not do the Mets any favors. Like when a guy complains about $50 parking and you go, we'll get a season pass that's only $40 a game. And you're 13 games under $500. That pisses people off. You don't get what my life's like. You don't have any understanding of what it's like to pay $40 to park because I only make $60 or $70,000 a year, which is what a lot of people are saying, right? Then you have the fact that they're now kicking fans out of the stadium because they bring signs that say fire the GM. And his response to that, much like you and I experienced when we had those people on the radio day after opening day, when random people saved a man's life who collapsed behind home plate and his response to it was he didn't have a heart attack, he merely fainted. To many, he minimized what took place that day.
