Speakers: Craig Carton, Chris McMonigle

When people like to blame the officials, it's moments like that, where there's no explanation, the broadcast doesn't explain it to you, nobody asks about it after the game, and we just accept it like, oh, those things happen.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:14)
They happen.

**Craig Carton** (0:15)
I'm trying to win a championship here.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:17)
Yeah, no.

**Craig Carton** (0:18)
For the first time in 53 years.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:20)
We don't have time for these things that just happen.

**Craig Carton** (0:21)
Sons of bitches, right?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:23)
Bit strong, but sure.

**Craig Carton** (0:24)
Was that a bit strong?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:25)
Maybe.

**Craig Carton** (0:27)
Was that better?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:28)
Probably.

**Craig Carton** (0:29)
You think?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:30)
Yeah.

**Craig Carton** (0:30)
All right.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:31)
All right.

**Craig Carton** (0:31)
It seems like that might have been a little bit better.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:33)
I mean, it's possible. I don't know.

**Craig Carton** (0:35)
But who do you think? That's better? Yeah, that's what I would say to the officials. You're a huge bitch.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:40)
Yeah. That should come out on the report today.

**Craig Carton** (0:42)
You got six spurs on the court, and the refs are like, you know what? Go back to the bench, Dylan. We're going to reset everything.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:50)
Listen.

**Craig Carton** (0:50)
Except for the shot clock, which we're not going to reset to eight.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:53)
Well, that's the major problem. But to be fair, like you said, the Knicks could have had three or four guys kicked out of the game. So, like, it happens.

**Craig Carton** (1:00)
Yes, it happens. And by the way, by the rule, those guys should have been kicked out of the game when Hart got up, because now you have a fracas.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:07)
We would have been flipping out.

**Craig Carton** (1:09)
Because we've lived it. Heat Knicks 30 years ago.
And my dear friend Tim Hardaway has walked me through his role in that. He went to the refs and said...

**Chris McMonigle** (1:18)
They're all over.

**Craig Carton** (1:20)
You got to go look at the tape. They're all off the bench. And starts naming them.
And Tim takes great pride and ownership in the fact that he claims responsibility. That he went to the officials and said...
Let's go look at the tape. Half the Knicks bench is on the court. They should all be kicked out of the game. And they were. And that's why we lost to the Heat that year. Here's Eddie in the Bronx on the fan. Eduardo, how are you today, kiddo?

**SPEAKER_3** (1:44)
Hey, how you doing, Craigy?

**Craig Carton** (1:46)
Great.

**SPEAKER_3** (1:46)
Listen, guys, you are missing the whole. We are back to Jalen Brunson, dominating the basketball for 17 minutes, 17 seconds into 24
His plus minus over the last two games has been terrible. And the rest of the team goes stale when they play that way. We are reverting back to his regular season and we cannot do that. That run we had was based on the change in the offense. And they are not doing it.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:17)
Well, I mean, I think that's part of it. You also got to, when you say that, you also got to acknowledge they win game one of the Eastern Conference Finals because they reverted back to it. So there's times where it works. I agree you don't want to do it too much. And I do think there were times in this game where it felt like his poor shooting got to him and he was determined to get hot.
And they were so determined to get hot.

**Craig Carton** (2:36)
They were so good defensively against him, and specifically Castle, that it was like work for him to get the ball even across the timeline. And then set up the offense. So real quick, Moni McCutcheon, who is the Senior VP, Head of Development and Training for Referee Operations, was asked, I guess moments ago, about to play the unit I just discussed, where Dylan Harper is the sixth man on the court. You want to hear a cop-out answer?

**Chris McMonigle** (3:07)
Yes.

**Craig Carton** (3:08)
It should have been called the technical, because you're not allowed into the game. You have to make sure he is clear that he is not allowed in the game, or clear that he is allowed into the game. So he's saying the refs were not very clear with the spurs about whether or not they were going to let them sub Dylan Harper into the game. Either it's you can come in and they will sue you in, or you can't come in and they tell you to sit down. So he admits that they did a poor job of that, his words, not mine, administratively.
