The Carton Show TORCHES Steve Cohen: “He Just Told Mets Fans He Doesn’t Care What You Think!”

The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

July 1, 2026

Chris McMonigle and Craig debate whether Cohen's commitment to Stearns is smart ownership or completely tone-deaf, especially with the Mets sitting near the bottom of the National League and reportedly preparing to sell at the trade deadline.
Speakers: Craig Carton, Chris McMonigle, Mike

And I love that shirt you're wearing. It's a nice peach-colored polo.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:05)
I think it's more orange than peach.

**Craig Carton** (0:06)
No, it's peach. It's peach all day.
Ralph Lauren, right?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:10)
Yes, Ralph Lauren.

**Craig Carton** (0:11)
It's linen.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:11)
I have a couple of these linen shirts right now.

**Craig Carton** (0:13)
You're rocking the linen nicely. I like that.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:15)
Do you ever try and iron one of these things?

**Craig Carton** (0:16)
I like it. I don't iron. My wife does. It's not a man's job. At least in my house. If you're one of those guys that likes to iron, how about it?
If you want the house to be on fire and me to burn a room down, give me an iron.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:26)
I helped, but she ironed.

**Craig Carton** (0:28)
Yeah. I've made grilled cheese with an iron before.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:31)
I'm sure you have.

**Craig Carton** (0:31)
But I got, and that was my way of getting out of ironing.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:34)
I'm sure you made soup on a radiator.

**Craig Carton** (0:35)
Honey, I think if we take the iron, we can just make a grilled cheese with the iron.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:40)
That's where you-

**Craig Carton** (0:41)
Don't you ever touch my iron again. You got it.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:43)
Is that where you were making grilled cheeses with irons?

**Craig Carton** (0:45)
No. Federal prison. It was the other place.
Truth be told, that's where I learned the skill. I tried. I said, honey, I'm going to bring some things home from prison. You're going to love them. Oh, I'm so jealous. Oh, yeah.
We're going to make cake out of Oreo cookies and Coke. Oh, is that right? Yeah.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:02)
That's about you right.

**Craig Carton** (1:03)
Here's Mike in Brooklyn on the fan. Michael, how are you today?

**Mike** (1:08)
I'm going to put it to you.

**Craig Carton** (1:09)
I'm sorry?

**Chris McMonigle** (1:10)
Yeah.

**Mike** (1:12)
No.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:13)
No, it was funny.

**Mike** (1:14)
I'm watching this, the Yankees and the Mets, and they were playing the staggered at the same time. It was a 3-2 pitch for Freddie and Deval.
I'm just sitting there looking and going eye to eye to screen to screen.

**Craig Carton** (1:24)
Yeah. Tough day today. Mets are down 9-0, and the Yankees can't get a big hit.
Yeah.

**Mike** (1:30)
But also gets blasted into the gap, and then Deval gets the wildest hit.

**Craig Carton** (1:34)
Real quick, what's your take? You had something to say about Stearns and Cohen, I see?

**Mike** (1:39)
Oh, yeah. No, I just hope they take it easy on Stearns. I'm hearing that he's good.

**Craig Carton** (1:42)
They are taking it easy on him. He's guaranteed his job for two and a half more years, according to the owner today on a podcast. He did not speak publicly, he spoke on a podcast that you have to go find and download to get, rather than come on the voice of MetFans, WFAN, like every owner before him has done, whether they liked it or not. He decides to hide behind a podcast, which is okay, it's fine. I understand podcasts are mainstream these days. But what he said is, get this through your thick heads, MetFans.
And I'm power phrasing that. David Stearns ain't going anywhere. He has a five-year contract. He's going to be here for all five years, meaning we're essentially at the halfway point of David Stearns' tenure as the Mets General Manager. Or what do they call him?
President of Baseball Operations, Pobo, they call him, right? Pobo. He's going to be your Pobo for two and a half more years, whether you like it or not. Now I will say one thing I agree with Steve Cohen on that is, he's on his fifth Pobo.
He's only been the owner for five and a half years, right? You can't have a new Pobo every single year. I think you're going to put together a team that can win consistently.
But the one thing he didn't answer when he likes to flaunt the fact that two years ago, the New York Mets went to the NLCS with David Stearns as their Pobo, is that that wasn't his team. That's the team he inherited. And the key members of that team, well, yes, never won a championship, and that's part of their resume, they weren't his guys. His guys are now, what, 16 games under 500, and being embarrassed today in Toronto again.

**Chris McMonigle** (3:27)
And have been arguably the worst team in baseball since June 13th of last year.
