with Shal, Aaron Boone. Welcome to the Go Get Em! Podcast. I'm Chris McMonigle. And today, that was a good series victory for the New York Yankees. That was a fun game. That was a fun two games for the New York Yankees as they win two close games.
A one-run game and a two-run game, scoring four runs apiece. They take down Mize. They take down Skubal.
In a game today, I thought they were going to lose pretty much the entire game watching it. That's a good series win. And don't tell me that they're a bad team. I know they're under 500, and they've underachieved. There's no doubt. They're not the Tigers we thought they'd be. But the Tigers have had, I believe, the best record up until the series. I'm not sure now. But going into the series, they had the best record in the American League in June. They were starting to turn it around. Skubal was back. It was a tough pitching matchup, obviously, the first three games of this series. I'm sorry, the three games of this series, and particularly the last two games of this series. And the Yankees do what nobody expected them to do after the first game of the series. And that's kind of the feeling I have, is this is a good bounce back series for the Yankees. This is a good, test your mettle, who you are, because they lose that series against Cincinnati and have an ugly couple of days. And then you follow it up by that game one loss and the way Cole looked, the way the offense looked, Jazz with the lollipop, which maybe we'll talk about a little bit. I've already made my piece known. I don't know how much more there is to say about the Jazz and the lollipop.
I think we've already spent too much time on it, quite frankly, not a big deal. He comes through with the big home run in game two of the series, but they're staring their fourth loss in a row and losing their second series in a row and really starting to feel like the...
the injuries were starting to pile up.
And I know, and again, I don't want to dedicate this strictly to the fan base that I'm trying to reach, the fan base that's just already had it in their mind and that this team, the run-it-back Yankees, are destined to fail like every other team they've had over the last few years. And this isn't good enough and that isn't good enough and they're destined for failure, which I just... I'll never understand. And I don't want to dedicate this entire podcast to that. But I think a lot of fans were starting to get concerned, not necessarily that they would miss the playoffs or that, you know, anything crazy, but that a swoon was coming or that a real tough stretch was coming. And listen, maybe it is. Maybe tomorrow it starts against the Red Sox. I don't think so, but maybe. But it really felt like we were finally starting to see the war of attrition going in the wrong direction after all the injuries. And we saw a lot of stuff in that Cincinnati series and then the first game of this series starting pitching not as good, right?
And we'll get to Cole. Defense, still an issue. And we saw it tonight. The Martian can't complain about him tonight, but still, the defense certainly in the outfield, right? The lineup, Volpe, even though he's hitting well. And I think every week it feels like we need to have another conversation about Volpe and he's changing the narrative. Like, Volpe is consistently changing the narrative. From, hey, give him a chance, to, oh my god, he's terrible. It's obvious again, to, hey, he's getting two hits a night, hitting 270 So it seems like every week Anthony Volpe changes the narrative a bit, it's worth the conversation. But it felt like heading into that Saturday game. And if you lose that Saturday game, I keep saying every time I think it's a weekend, you lose that middle game, you got Skubal tonight, you're worried about getting swept, right? You're worried about getting swept and losing five in a row. And instead, the Yankees put their foot in the ground and say, no mas, no more.
And they give us two really, really good wins. And tonight was a very good win. And both games, the bullpen that nobody thinks is any good, that I think everyone agrees needs to be addressed. And the bullpen that needs to be added to, and the bullpen that, without question, scares us. And we even saw elements tonight with Duval. But the bullpen, like, let's be fair, in the last two games here, I'm sorry, that's right on the mic. On the last two games here, you've got two-thirds scoreless from Cruz, an inning and two-thirds scoreless from Hedrick, an inning and a third scoreless of Bednar. Tonight, you have two-thirds scoreless from Duval, an inning and a third of Cruz, and he's incredible. You got to talk about Cruz's performance tonight and an inning from Bednar. So, in the last two games of the series, the Yankees bullpen, the much-maligned Yankee bullpen that's not good enough to win with and everybody stinks and they're going to have to completely revamp it in a series where they're on the precipice of losing five in a row. Everybody all, you know, everyone's at the door. Everyone's at the door ready to tear this team down. You got the lollipop incident. Not only are they bad, but they don't care. The manager, you know, the same stuff about Boone and he doesn't, you know, it's the club, he's allowed the atmosphere where lollipops are okay and all that crap. And this bullpen and this team and this offense without judge step up and get two really big wins. There's a lot of other things to talk about, obviously, with Cabrera back and the IL stint of McMahon and the bullpen of De La Santos, as opposed to Cruz and the minor Giovanni Cruz. But this was a really good series win. And when you get a game like tonight and we're on right after it, I usually like to kind of break down that game first while it's fresh in my mind. And then we'll get to some other things. So I want to start with tonight's victory because obviously it's a huge game and a huge victory.
