Hour 1: McMonigle: Anthony Volpe Needs to Stop Starting at Shortstop

The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

July 6, 2026

Chris McMonigle analyzes the New York Yankees' recent collapse and the lack of urgency regarding player performance and roster management on The Carton Show. He argues that changes are necessary at shortstop and in the bullpen to salvage the division race before the upcoming series in Tampa.

McMonigle here with you on The Carton Show No Craig today or all week. And that's probably better for me because I don't feel like having my face rubbed in it. But I'm sure you'll take advantage of it at 888-808-1019 as we will get to it all here on The Carton Show. Got you till 6 o'clock Yankee pregame. Obviously, we'll get to the soccer tonight's big game against Belgium. And we know who will be playing and the president saved US. Soccer. We'll get to all of that but we have to start with yes, even though Evan prefaced it, yes. We are starting with the New York Yankees who are a disaster right now heading in to the biggest series of the season. And coming off this weekend, 4th of July, which again was a devastating loss for the New York Yankees in a lot of reasons. One, obviously, because it was the Minnesota Twins and the Yankees have treated the Minnesota Twins like a doormat for as long as I can remember, quite honestly. And it's the first time they've lost the home series against Minnesota since 2014 And more than that, they win the first game of the series.
They finally get that, we're waiting for guys off the injury to come back and help this team. And Grisham comes back and not that he's Aaron Judge and not that he's a huge needle mover, but he is in many ways that will help them defensively, at least it should. It will help them offensively, at least it should. And he comes back and he hits a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the first, introduces himself back to the Yankee fans, Ben Rice with the big home run, the bullpen does the job, Garrett Cole not great, but pretty good through a rain delay. And you feel like, all right, you know you got the Tampa Bay series coming up and this Yankee team is gonna find a way to at least win one of the next two. And then they don't just lose. And I know that you get the Rodin injury and Brendan Beck has to start. And he gives up three runs to the first three hitters on the 4th of July. But not only do they lose to Minnesota, but they get their asses kicked. They get embarrassed. They lose two games in definitive fashion over early in the game. You can turn it off on the fourth and I don't know how you didn't. I don't know how you didn't, how you stayed at the game. God bless you for 98 degrees on 4th of July, Saturday, watching the Yankees get drubbed by Minnesota.
And to lose the next game and watch Weathers not have it, still sick, whatever the excuses are, watch the Bullpen and Doval blow it again, and that's really where we are. The entire team in every facet over the last 10 games, and I know we want to go prior to the last 10 games and call it, I don't know why we're so obsessed, and I know Craig has given it to me and a lot of you guys have given it to me, that I won't call it a swoon or whatever, who cares what we call it? We literally call it a swoon because it rhymes with June, but we have to call it, like who cares what we call it over the last 10 games? Because prior to the last 10 games, they were on pace to win 98 games and with 3 and a half games up in the division. In the last 10 games, along with the Rays getting hot and winning 8 of those 10, the Yankees have won one game in the last 10 against teams that are double digit games under 500 in the case of the Tigers and the Red Sox. And then a Minnesota team that does score runs, but is the doormat of the New York Yankees for a generation.
And they do it with every single aspect of the team failing. This once great rotation has been dreadful over this stretch, including Cam, who goes tonight, and I'm going to get to that in a second.
Cole has not been good enough over his last few starts. Rodin now injured. Weathers and Warren showing like the back end of the bullpen guys that they, a back end of the rotation guys that they are. The bullpen outside of really Bednar has at least in times picked their spot to blow up. Doval is unpitchable at this point practically, and should be in the minors. We're going to get to that in just a second. But it's every aspect, defensively, running the bases. We saw Jazz get picked off.
