Hour 1: A Knicks Ticker Tape Parade Fifty-Three Years in the Making

Got a great show for you today. Obviously, still more Nick enjoyment. Not everyone who got to voice their opinion. Love to hear the stories of fathers and sons and mothers and daughters all bonding together around the Knicks. We're now 48 hours away. Well, that's actually from what will be the greatest and grandest parade for a sports team in New York City history at all. You may not know the history of this. The New York Knicks did not get a parade in 1970 The New York Knicks did not get a parade in 1973 So this will be the first parade the New York Knicks have ever had. Good afternoon, Big Mac. I'm doing great, Craig. How did I not know that?

**Craig Carton** (0:59)
Yeah, true story.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:00)
The Knicks did not get a parade in either championship?

**Craig Carton** (1:03)
That is correct.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:04)
Wow.

And the reason.

The first ever championship parade?

So just to give you a quick history lesson. The mayor back then was a guy named John Lindsay. John Lindsay did not believe in ticker tape parades for sports teams. So we had him prior to that.
I'll double check when they got reinstated. I don't remember that exactly. And instead, in 1970, they did a basic kind of quiet ceremony at Gracie Mansion. And then in 1973, they did a city hall reception. And get this one. They did a reception at the airport.
They did not do a ticker tape parade for the New York Knicks. So this Thursday will be the first ever ticker tape parade for the New York Knicks franchise. How about that?

**Chris McMonigle** (1:55)
I figured it was so long ago that it was too expensive to chop up the papyrus. Like that's, I mean, it's been that long. I wasn't sure we had paper yet.

**Craig Carton** (2:03)
Yeah.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:03)
It's been 53 years. First one ever. I'm looking forward to it.

**Craig Carton** (2:06)
Yeah. Which is another reason why it's going to be the biggest one of all time.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:09)
It is. It's going to be the biggest party we've ever seen.

Absolutely right.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:12)
I don't know how we quantify it. I mean, we've seen them now on Jimmy Fallon. They're all over the place. They're doing every talk show and every time they walk out there with that championship trophy or whatever else, it puts a smile on all of our faces. It does. I don't care where they are. I don't care if you hate the show they're going on. If you think he's not funny, if you hate that stupid show, it doesn't matter.
They stepped on to the stage and it brings a big smile to my face.

Yeah. There's also another parade which is going to take place tomorrow up on the Upper West Side.
There's a Children's Museum up there and it's going to be a parade on 83rd between Broadway and Amsterdam. So Upper West Side, it's being thrown by the Children's Museum up there. I used to live on 86th and Broadway so I know the area pretty well.
It's basically a baby stroller neighborhood, right? It's all young families up there so it's a great spot. And that way kids who you're not going to bring down to the drunken parade that they're going to enjoy on Thursday get to have a little connection to the New York Knicks but they chose I think something very interesting for the Children's Museum parade on Wednesday up on the Upper West Side. They chose two Grand Marshals for that parade. One Grand Marshal is Jessica Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld's wife. Okay. That's fine or whatever. It's all good, right? I know their kids aren't that young anymore but maybe they have an apartment on the Upper West Side or maybe they contribute money to the Children's Museum. Who knows what it is. The other gal though, I find this interesting, considering this is a parade for children and not like 18 year olds or 15 year olds, this is for single digit age kids. That's who they want to let them celebrate a little piece of New York City, right? Sure. So the other Grand Marshal that the Children's Museum thought would be a great Grand Marshal is the comedian, a comedian, Amy Schumer.
I found that odd. If I may quote one of Amy Schumer's more popular stand up bits, male ejaculation during sex is the same as being slimed during a game show on Nickelodeon. Huh, huh, perhaps she'll tell that joke in front of the five year olds while celebrating a Nick Championship.
