What is now a much better Thursday? I feel a hell of a lot better than I did yesterday. As the Yankees get the final game of the four game set and salvage the split that they desperately needed. And I said yesterday, I think I said on the podcast as well, to go get them, go listen to it. Any way you get your podcast.
That I wouldn't be like thrilled with it. They needed the split. They were desperate for the split. Couldn't do worse. Couldn't come out of this worse than you went in it. Couldn't lose three out of four. Couldn't be six games behind with a guaranteed loss in the tie break. Right? And I still think they're probably, they would have to sweep the four game set at Yankee Stadium in September to win the tie break. But they needed the split. But I wouldn't be happy. And I wouldn't be excited. It would be the bare minimum. And after last night's, again, offensive, just debacle. Just another hideous performance. Like I had so many, I have so many things I want to yell about last night from the bunt to everything else. But I have to say, as much as I don't think you can get excited as a Yankee fan, today wasn't just a win to get that split. Today, a lot of things happened. Now they have to carry it into the Washington series. They have to carry it moving forward. This can't be a one-off and go lose two out of three to Washington. Then today doesn't mean as much. But today, you saw a lot of things that this team needs to do. Plain and simple, yes, the offense after last night, record-breaking 20 consecutive games without scoring more than five runs. We know the strikeouts continue to pile up in this series. They struck out again 11 times last night. It was just an ugly shutout performance. Cole was good, but not good enough.
And today, you came into it against Drew Rasmussen. Rasmussen, excuse me, never get his name right.
Who has owned the Yankees, who has pitched well this year, is one of the better pitchers in the American Leagues and All-Star. And you're throwing a bullpen game, starting with Blackburn.
And I can tell you the vibes from me, this Yankee fan. I was not expecting it with this game. I was talking to Connor, who's running the board right now, before the game. And I am as optimistic as any Yankee fan I know. And I went into this game with real concerns about losing three or four, continuing this nonsense. We saw Brian Cashman, who is, yes, there for the draft, and he's going to be working in Tampa. But he spoke. And we'll get to what he had to say at 888-808-1019, because he gave us some updates, specifically injuries, specifically judge. We'll get to it. But it felt like, you know what? I kind of needed to hear from Cash. Here we are. They're going to lose 3 out of 4 They don't touch Rasmussen. The offense is as bad as it's been, literally, in 100 years.
It's just, this is as bad as it could possibly be. Set up as bad as it could possibly be set up.
Blackburn comes in. He gives up a home run to Caminero in the first inning. And they had shut him down the entire series. One of the only positives about the first three games is that they kept him off the scoreboard. And he hits a 430 foot bomb and they're down 1-0. And you know how this game is going to go. And then the third inning happened. And so many positive things for the New York Yankees happened in that third inning. And it starts with what I think right now. And I know we're in the middle of it and I'm probably being hyperbolic. And I know we're, you know, I'm in the, I'm being a slave to the moment or whatever you want to say. But that Ryan McMahon at bat today, screw recency bias. That Ryan McMahon at bat today is the at bat of the season for me. Because they desperately needed this game. And we had seen a lifeless team with no effort, just going through the motions. And Schumann, who we need a conversation about him as well, but Schumann leads off the inning with a double. And then Ryan McMahon goes to work. And this has been, you know, has been one of the main problems with the run-it-back Yankees. He stinks. He's a terrible hitter. He's a great defender. Great. He can't hit. They're locked into him for more years. He's making 15 million dollars. They need to replace him at third base. Like, these have been legitimate and fair conversations about how bad Ryan McMahon has been for this team. And he gives you a 12-pitchet bat, fouling off fastball after fastball after fastball. And we're sitting there just saying, don't strike out. I know I went on a whole rant about how the strikeouts weren't as important as everybody's making them out to be. This would be one of those at bats. Just hit a ground ball to second base. Just move the runner over. Do your job. Girardi's talking about it. Do your job. Do your job.
