That's Spooky

December 20, 2023

Fresh hell would be a luxury! This week Tyler and Johnny discuss the Peoria State Hospital and it's haunted history. Plus: our first special guest (kinda), a man with a small petting zoo in his pants, and a surefire way to keep problematic ghosts at bay.
Speakers: Johnny, Tyler
**Johnny** (0:29)
Hi, everyone, welcome to That's Spooky, I'm Johnny.

**Tyler** (0:31)
And I'm Tyler.

**Johnny** (0:32)
And this is a weekly podcast. They won't rid your house of negative spirits, but it will piss off the problematic ones enough that they'll probably leave you alone while you listen, at least.

**Tyler** (0:41)
Absolutely, yeah, they'll be like, no, not for our ears, thank you.

**Johnny** (0:44)
Yeah, exactly, they're like, unfortunately, I don't hold domain over electronics, so I'll be back in, like, what, an hour and a half? These episodes never fucking end.

**Tyler** (0:54)
Yeah, exactly.

**Johnny** (0:55)
Yeah, they're like, what, a podcast is like 45 minutes, and then they roll up to this one, and they're like, this one's an hour and 54, what the fuck?

**Tyler** (1:02)
This is like two podcasts in one.

**Johnny** (1:03)
They're on the blue bus.
God, all right, hi, everyone. How are we doing today?

**Tyler** (1:11)
We're doing good, I think we're doing good. We're doing gorgeous a little bit, I'm pretty sure.

**Johnny** (1:14)
Yeah, you know what, I would say that is astute.
I would say that is a proper reading of this moment in time. I am fresh back from my first trip home in four years.

**Tyler** (1:26)
That's right.

**Johnny** (1:27)
And guess what didn't happen?

**Tyler** (1:28)
What didn't happen?

**Johnny** (1:29)
We didn't scatter grandma's ashes.

**Tyler** (1:30)
It's true.

**Johnny** (1:31)
In fact, she's here, everyone.

**Tyler** (1:34)
Grandma is right here, a surprise guest of the week.

**Johnny** (1:37)
So remember back in December of 2019, when my grandma died live on the podcast? Well, it's December, 2023, and my grandma's ashes are now sitting four feet away from me.

**Tyler** (1:49)
Yes.

**Johnny** (1:49)
In a turn of events, day one, I go to my parents' place. I'm back in Nova Scotia, it's wonderful. We're saying hello, we're hugging, everything's wonderful. There was no drama the whole time I was home. I loved it. But I tell my dad where I'm gonna spread grandma's ashes the next morning, because my idea was, do it on morning one, you know, go to the ocean. It's the maritime respectful thing to do.
Well, fun fact, tell my dad that I'm spreading grandma in the ocean and his face drops and he goes, she's afraid of the water. She would not want to go in the water.

**Tyler** (2:19)
Right.

**Johnny** (2:20)
Because what did I tell you about maritime spookiness?

**Tyler** (2:22)
That's right. It's intrinsic. Yeah, exactly. Maritime people are afraid of the ocean, rightfully so.

**Johnny** (2:28)
No, we're not all afraid of the ocean, but we're all just like, don't piss off the spirit. And like, let's hold the spirit's demands in the forefront. Yeah.

**Tyler** (2:36)
Also that.

**Johnny** (2:37)
Yeah, I love the ocean, bitch, speak for yourself. But anyway, with that being said, right away, I was like, okay, now we have to pivot. So the plan was to do it a little bit later while I was there, but my dad was like, oh, spread her on the beach, whatever. But she always said, don't put me in water. So anyway, with that piece of information, I go forward, the next day, I'm back at my parents' place.
And I know my parents aren't gonna listen to this. And family, if you hear this, don't mention this, but it was the cutest thing. My dad was like, oh, did you spread grandma on? I was like, no. And then he goes, you know, oh, I wish that I hadn't gotten rid of Oliver. I wish I had held onto a little bit. And turns out she had been sitting on his desk for the last four years. So this got me thinking.
And you know, we always hear about these different things that you can do with cremains.
So I was like, well, let's spread the joy a little bit. And after poking around a little bit, and I say proverbially poking, because really it was just seeing what my mother didn't find ghoulish.

**Tyler** (3:33)
Yes.

**Johnny** (3:33)
But after I found an approved process, I signed us up and essentially, grandma is gonna be introduced into some glass and blown into at least five, like marbled glass stones. Yeah. Yeah.
And yeah, it's a company in Denver. I believe they're called The Living Urn. If anybody's interested, reach out. I'll totally send you the information. This isn't sponsored, but it's so cool. My parents and the people in my family, especially the folks that had been with her for decades upon decades.

**Tyler** (4:05)
Yeah, her kids.

**Johnny** (4:06)
Yeah, exactly. They're feeling real good about it. Yeah. That's the thing. I'm not here to gatekeep grandma and it would have felt weird to spread her in the ocean. So anyway, here's the fun thing.
