Two Sixteen: A Link to the Past Randomizer Podcast

November 20, 2025

Two-Sixteen Podcast – Remembering Cassidy (Rerelease) In this rerelease, we’re revisiting my conversation with Cassidy, a quiet but incredibly dedicated member of the ALTTP Randomizer community.
Speakers: Jesse Munoz, Cassidy Moen

Well, shit.
I actually had an episode planned to go live, and I'm gonna delay that until next week, because I just saw the news.
Cassidy Moen's passing. In Tark, in the main ALTTPR Discord, there was an announcement by VTORP. Says to the ALTTPR community, we were left breath yesterday morning with the news of the passing of Cassidy Moen, as relayed to us by his family. Cassidy was known to many of you as a fellow racer, but he also served as a late but potent addition to the development team. His work behind the scenes laid the framework for many of the newer features he'd been enjoying, as well as for ideas not yet implemented. And in addition to our project, Cassidy was an avid hacker in general who enjoyed Super Metroid and Final Fantasy IV Free Enterprise. He was also an important person in the Two Sixteen community, like very active, listened to the show, and would engage in some really fun conversations and really enjoy his music takes. Like we have created a bunch of Two Sixteen playlists and he would always contribute and always loved his like eclectic music tastes. It just sucks, I don't know the situations or cause of death, but I'm really sad. I'm really sad and heartbroken as I really appreciate who he was, what he brought to the community, and just who he is as a person. So I'm re-releasing his episode from 2003 that we recorded. Yeah, I'm really bummed, really sad to hear this news. So don't delay in telling your friends and family and the people that you love how much you love and respect them while they're still here, because you never know when the time's up. And yeah, just really heartbroken over this news. There'll be a new episode of Two Sixteen coming out next week, but in his memory, listen to his story here that he was able to tell on my show. And I feel lucky that I got a chance to talk to him and cheer his story. We'll miss you, dude. We'll miss you. All right, Cassidy, thanks for coming on the show, man. Super excited to chat and, you know, we've known each other for quite a bit. You hang out my streams. I know that we have a very similar relationship to music because of all the times that we've been jamming in my stream with all the all the stuff that you've brought. But I don't really know you all that well. And I don't know if you kind of really put yourself out there in the community all that much other than being a part of the community. So I'm super excited.

**Cassidy Moen** (2:59)
Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for having me on. Big fan of the show.

**Jesse Munoz** (3:02)
You have a different relationship with ALTTPR than some other people. Like you're not a commentator. I know you've done, I know you've done comms occasionally and you're not really a tracker and you play a little bit. I see you play a little bit, but you are more now, especially in the dev side of things, right? Like that, would you say is mostly your role?

**Cassidy Moen** (3:26)
Yeah, yeah, pretty much. I used to race a lot more like back in the day, like 2018 to 2019 maybe. But yeah, most of the time, like, you know, I still race in the latter, but like most of my engagement with it, I would say, yeah, it's like doing development, mostly on the, like the ROM side of things. And what does that mean?

**Jesse Munoz** (3:45)
What do you mean by the ROM side of things? Like actually changing what happens to the ROM when when it gets patched over?

**Cassidy Moen** (3:52)
So basically, like the way the project is structured kind of is like there's what we call like the template assembly. And assembly is like basically machine code for the SNES. Right. So so there's like a lot of like ROM hacking, basically that goes into making everything work and like appear seamless. So what we have is like the way it's like structured is we have like the base ROM, which is just kind of like this blank slate. And then that's all written and like assembly. And then the randomizer just writes data to it. It doesn't write any like Super Nintendo code or anything. All it does is write like your items and your boss and stuff.

**Jesse Munoz** (4:31)
OK.

**Cassidy Moen** (4:32)
So, yeah. So mostly what I'm doing is like, you know, fixing bugs like in the ROM or just like, you know, writing new features, stuff like that.
