Thank God I called that guy. All right. Well, thank God something else happened. And the one thing I needed to have happen, what we as Yankee fans needed to have happen, the one thing I think undisputed should be a criticism of the manager is how much even after he said Caballero is the starting shortstop, now that Grisham is back, running Volpi out two out of three games at the starting shortstop position. That needs to end. And tonight at least, and we'll see, I'm not saying, you see, I knew he would come around, he still has three more games this series.
But tonight Jose Caballero is the starting shortstop and Anthony Volpi is not in the lineup. Trent Grisham, I think this is the best lineup they could throw out there, even with Austin Wells in it. He could put Sanchez in it, but does that really matter as bad as he is too? I suppose that you could argue right now Sanchez is better than Wells, but outside of that, against the right-handed pitcher, Trent Grisham leading off, Ben Rice DH-ing, Paul Goldschmidt hitting third at first, Cody Bellinger clean up in left, Jason Dominguez hitting fifth and right, Jazz at second base, back from the toe injury, so he's not, thankfully he's healthy, because as lousy as he's been right now, they need him. Jose Caballero as you're starting shortstop, Ryan McMahon at third, Austin Wells as catcher, and of course Cam on the mound. And as we've kind of indicated all show long, this group has to show up tonight. It will be a real indictment on everybody including the manager. I can talk till I'm blue in the face about Aaron Boone, it's not his fault, I genuinely feel that way. He's got to figure out a way to get this team going tonight. Tonight, this series, it starts with the starting pitcher, because it's easy to say, they had no life if he gives up 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Like that can't happen. They have fallen behind in these games. Cam Schlittler needs to be the ace tonight. They need him desperately. This has got to be a game he shows up. He's got to have a feel, the team has to have a feel. And Cam Schlittler talks like it. Cam Schlittler talks about we need to have a chip on our shoulder against the Blue Jays. Cam Schlittler obviously talks about how they need to perform against the Red Sox. Cam Schlittler talks about winning championships and anything short of that is a failure. He has been that guy, he has made it clear how he feels about it. He's embraced the Big Bad Yankees. He's embraced the Evil Empire, if that's still a talking point. But he's embraced that everybody brings their best game against the Yankees. He's embraced all of this. Tonight he needs to pitch as if this is a playoff game. This is a huge start. This is the biggest regular season start of Cam Schlittler's career.
And he can't put the Yankees in a hole tonight.
Now he can't do it himself, obviously.
But they need a big performance from him. Because if they fall behind 4-0 in the second inning, like yeah, I mean, they could look lifeless offensively, but just right now with the team they're throwing out there, I don't feel very confident about them down four runs early. No matter who the manager is, no matter how amped they are for the series, like just what they have, they're behind the eight ball down three four runs. He needs to do what he does and go out there and throw fastballs by everybody. But overall, yeah, this team needs to look and feel a hell of a lot better tonight in Tampa than it has over the last ten games. And if they don't, and this series is ugly, it's an indictment on everybody, including Aaron Boone.
