Best of the Yankees on WFAN: Is Anthony Volpe's time up?

The guys basically reclaimed his shortstop job. Since he's been activated, he has started 10 of the 13 games at shortstop. Now, Cabe has played, don't get me wrong, he's played a couple of games at third base, he's played a game in left field, he's played three games in right field, so it's not as if he's been banished, but Volpe's become the everyday shortstop. He made an egregious error yesterday, he hasn't really hit, and yet Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees are again having their public love affair with Anthony Volpe based on playing time.

It is unfortunate, but so predictable, that as soon as there was a lane to play Anthony Volpe every day, while they told us he wouldn't play every day, he would. He's back in the lineup at short today. Caballero is back in right.

**Evan Roberts** (0:55)
So it will be 11 out of the 14 games. And yes, again, Caballero is playing. He's just not the shortstop, despite being graded as the best defensive shortstop in baseball when he was playing shortstop. Just want to throw that in there.

Yeah. And here's the thing. It is not just on one side of the ball. You brought up the play last night. And to be honest with you, I actually think that might have been like the fourth worst Anthony Volpe defensive play I've seen in like the last 10 days. To be fair, I thought that was a really, really tough hop, but he wanted no part of it. Anthony Volpe, three years ago, eats that ball at his chest at the very least and keeps it in front of him.
Are we not referring to the same players? Or are you looking at me?

One of the criticisms I face from my wife and from Shaun is, let me talk, right? Hey, Evan, let me talk.
So I work on that. I want to listen. So then sometimes I'll be listening to my wife and she's like, are you even paying attention? You're not saying anything. I'm like, I'm letting you talk. So right now, as the Yankee guy at this radio station.

In his rookie year, eats that bowl and at least keeps it in front of him. The night before, I thought it was even worse when he goes to turn that double play for Jazz and it's almost like a half a double clutch he has.
Anthony Volpe is back to the point we were at last year where last year we were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt by the end of it about injury. He is not hurt. He is not healthy. He is a mental puddle defensively. He doesn't trust his instincts. He doesn't trust any ball that comes his way. He is overthinking and you know the deal at shortstop in the Major League Baseball. You overthink for even half of a second. It costs runners. It costs outs.
And his approach at the plate on the other side is simply guessing. And yes, what do any of us know about hitting 99 mile an hour fastballs? There is zero presence. Three one count. Let me just swing away or whatever I want. He can't choke up on the bat with two strikes. Like Cody Bellinger will you know do it and figure out where to put a ball in the direction. It is complete guesswork on both sides. That is not being the shortstop of the Yankees. This is too good a team to be in a situation where Anthony Volpe does that. Now Evan you had brought up whether it was the beginning of this year, last year, whatever the hell it was talking about Anthony Volpe and eventually just being a super utility guy.
