The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

June 27, 2026

This week was NOT short on Mets rants, as Boomer and Gio sounded off on how poorly the team has played this season, with Boomer comparing these Mets to Phil Jackson's Knicks. Plus, Evan Roberts ripped the team for being "awful," and called on Steve Cohen to speak about the state of the franchise.
Speakers: Craig Carton, Chris McMonigle, Evan Roberts

The chanting of Pete Alonso last night by the fans, I understand that you love the guy, but if Pete Alonso were on this team, they wouldn't be that much better. Now, I know you'd feel better about it. You'd go to the game, you'd wear your polar bear stuff. He's your guy.
All the things we talked about when he left. But this pitching has been so bad. Last year, he was on this team having a good year, and they slowly collapsed because the pitching was horrible.
This year, they get a lead, gone. Or they're down 7-0 before you even blink an eye. They've got rid of these two guys, essentially. Kodai Singh is going to go to the bullpen. I hope we never see him again. David Peterson gets traded to the Cubs. Okay, now we'll see who they replace them with. But Pete Alonso isn't the magic elixir that would have made this team a playoff team. They got so many problems.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:52)
I will say maybe they're addressing their problems now by making some of these trades and some of these decisions, which is what they have to do. But then after a while, there are certain guys like Marcus Simeon who are going to be playing second base. He's your second baseman. Mark Vientos is going to be a part-time first baseman for you. He's going to make a couple of errors.
This was folly city yesterday. And to have what they have, like 2,000 people for the first game, I don't even know how many people were at the first game.
So they are irrelevant at the moment. There are a lot of big stars making a lot of big, a lot of money. And it just feels like the Knicks, you know, when Phil Jackson was here. That's what it feels like. Let's spend as much money as we possibly can on the completely wrong group of guys and become totally disconnected.

**Craig Carton** (1:42)
Yeah, I remember it was a couple of years ago in 2024 before they went on, or 2023, 2024, 2024 when they went on the run and the guy threw the glove into the stands and-

**Chris McMonigle** (1:53)
They got rid of them.

**Craig Carton** (1:54)
They got rid of them and Gary Cohen said, you know, it's hard to believe that this isn't rock bottom and there's like no fans in the building and they were terrible and everything else and then they ended up going on a run. Well, he had one of those quotes yesterday. So we'll see if this now is the new catalyst for the Mets to turn it around. As Gary Cohen said, quote, This team is in the depth of despair. This is the kind of game that causes re-evaluations.
There he is, he the man has spoken.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:26)
The tablets have come down from Mount Cohen.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:29)
Wait, wait, wait, this is the kind of team that what now?

**Craig Carton** (2:33)
I just read it.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:34)
I'm sorry. I was.

**Craig Carton** (2:36)
This team is in the depths of despair. This is the kind of game that causes re-evaluations.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:47)
I think they're in the midst of re-evaluations with trades and sending guys to the bullpen and things of that nature, don't you think so?

**Craig Carton** (2:54)
Yeah, is he talking about re-evaluations with Carlos Mendoza? Is he talking about Steve Cohen re-evaluating David Stearns as being the guy that's supposed to turn this team around?

**Chris McMonigle** (3:01)
Well, he said multiple re-evaluations, so I would think it's not just the players, it's what the team is doing, how the team is being run, and the way the manager is managing. So, multiple re-evaluations, because there was an S on the back of that.

**Craig Carton** (3:15)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, at least two re-evaluations.

**Chris McMonigle** (3:19)
Well, there's got to be more than that. I mean, because you got all the players, you got the entire coaching staff. I mean, I don't know what to tell you.
It is a complete S show at the moment. At the moment. I mean, and when they come back from the All-Star break, which is what, in about a couple of weeks, when they come back from the All-Star break, they're opening, I think, 12 games against the Phillies, the Brewers, the Braves, and the Phillies again, I think. Think about that opening 12 game salvo.

**Craig Carton** (3:54)
That's gonna be great. It's gonna be awesome. Can't wait for that.

**Chris McMonigle** (4:00)
And the trade deadline, at the moment, it feels like whoever you can get rid of, you gotta get rid of. I feel like if they only had a salary of $50 million right now, I'd be happy with that.
