This episode is sponsored by Fora Travel. I've always been the person people come to for travel advice. Whether it's planning a camping trip in northern Michigan, figuring out how to travel well with kids across the country, or finding experiences that actually help families connect instead of just filling an itinerary. I genuinely have loved helping people create meaningful adventures. And I know a lot of you listening are probably that person too. The friend who plans the trip, the one who researches the details, the one person people trust to find the hidden gems and make everything run smoothly.
Fora is built for people exactly like that. Fora is a modern travel agency that helps people build their own travel business, no matter what stage of life they're in. You don't need prior experience because Fora gives you the training, technology and support to help you get started. And you're joining a community of people who are building businesses centered around experiences, relationships and helping others travel well. A lot of advisors begin simply by helping people they already know and grow naturally from there. What I also appreciate is that there are no sales quotas or minimums. You can build this at a pace that works for your life and your family. Your next act starts here. Become a Fora advisor today at foratravel.com/1000hours.

Welcome to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast. My name is Ginny Yurich. I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside and I am thrilled. I've really been looking forward to this. Catherine Price is back. Last time we talked about your book, How to Break Up with Your Phone, and we talked about The Power of Fun, How to Feel Alive. Again, these are fantastic books. But since then, you've had a new book come out called The Amazing Generation that you wrote with Jonathan Haidt, and it's geared toward kids to read it. And it's a guide for them for fun and freedom in a screen-filled world. Welcome back to you.

Thank you so much for having me, Ginny.

Okay, you also have a new family guide. And this is a seven-day guide to get the family on the same page. People can find that at catherineprice.com/family. And I'll make sure I'll put that in the show notes. Can you talk about this is a really big overarching question, but these two new projects. So the family guide, you also have a free resource kit on your website, The Family Guide and The Amazing Generation.
**Catherine Price** (2:10)
Yes, I'm excited to talk about both.
So The Amazing Generation, as you said, and as we when we talked last fall, we that was this book was about to come up, but it wasn't out yet. It is a, the subtitle of that is The Your Guide to Fun and Freedom in a Screen-Filled World, and it is a book that is specifically written for kids and teenagers, although we've also heard from adults who found it useful, that's intended to help younger people understand the forces that are working against us when it comes to technology, why it's so hard to have healthy boundaries with it, and give them some tools that they can use to actually fill their lives with what John and I call real friendship, freedom, and fun.
Because if you think about it, part of the reason that all of us are so attracted to spending lots of time on screens is that there's this promise that being on screens will help us connect with other people, it will give us fun, and it will give us the freedom to discover our own interests and figure out who we are, etc. But in reality, the good stuff comes in real life. So that's the point of The Amazing Generation. Then I wanted to also give families a resource or provide a resource that they could use to all get on the same page. Because one thing that's become very apparent whenever I give talks to schools, is that kids notice us on our screens too. If we want our children to have good habits around technology, we need to model it ourselves. Another really useful tool for any family that's struggling with screen time and getting in fights about screen time is to help get kids and adults on the same page, on the same level. So I created the seven-day guide to screen life balance for families to use, where it's basically like an interactive week-long challenge, where you get your kids to ask questions to you, you ask your kids questions, you kind of look at all of your screen cabots holistically, and you try to figure out how can we as a family incorporate more fun and real connection and real experiences into our lives.
